Does anyone have experience with Fox Knives or Bohler N690Co steel? I'm looking at one of their knives for a Christmas gift, but haven't heard of them or that steel. Thanks.

N690Co is Bohler's very slightly improved version of VG-10. It's a great steel that sharpens easily, and performs well with the edge either polished or left a bit toothy by stopping at a lower grit. Fox Knives tend to make pretty good stuff, but it would help to know which specific model you're considering.

In my opinion, they are an outstanding Maker and N690 is an outstanding steel, neither of which get the attention they should. One of my favorite folders is my Spyderco Volpe, a N690 collab between Spyderco and Fox. It is one of the finest finished production knives I own and the engraving might be the finest I have ever seen on a knife. I had a chance to use a Fox folder passaround which was N690, designed by Bob T. I find the steel to be tough & chip resistant, hold a good edge, and easy to sharpen (and to my understanding, it also has great stain resistance.) I agree with ugaarguy in its similarities to VG-10. It takes that same biting edge.
N690Co is a good blade steel.

While I don't have experience with the brand, these guys are an established name and S35VN is arguably one of the finer all-around cutlery steels available because it performs very well in all categories (and it's not terribly hard to sharpen.) Between choosing S35VN, the thumb jimping, bottom finger guard, flat grind, the machining/refinement of the G10, and full tang, I imagine this is would make an outstanding hunter and could easily double as a bushcraft/survival blade. Chances are someone will have it for around $100, and they might offer the European profile in another model?

I doubt you can find one nowadays for anything close to a reasonable price, but the Spyderco Impala w/ gut hook also comes to mind. It's a VG-10 knife, so like N690, its properties are a solid match for this usage IMO, plus it can double as an EDC. But they discontinued it a while back and I don't think they made many, so finding one could be tough.
Benchmade used to make several fixed blade hunters with wooden handles and gut hooks for under $100, some of which used S30V steel. Here's a synthetic handled model I found, but it is a lot more than I remember and I recall them making models that fit the profile of the Fox you are considering...the prices may have gone up, they may have discontinued its production, or I am just not finding what I am looking for?

I am guessing it must have been discontinued since I cannot find it, but I also recall Benchmade making a hunter with gut hook out of 154CM, branded with their NRA line, and being around the same price as the Fox?

Buck makes a couple gut hook style knives. One is the Zipper and another,I think, is called the Bucklite max.
Is Fox in Italy? I think they made the Fairbairn-like knife that Veronica wore on her boot in the, Lost World TV series. You can see it well when she stabbed it into wood as she surrendered to Burton in the episode, "Trophies" on YouTube. The handle seemed to be either wood or leather. As I recall, a blued blade.
Now, pay attention to that knife as you watch! You can re-run the video to see her better. And you'll want to.
Her First Season belt knife was the British MOD Jungle Survival Knife, pretty crude. The character Finn had what I think was a Puma Backpacker or a variant in the scene where she threatened to cut up Arthur the beetle. "Trophies" is a Second Season episode. All episodes with Finn are Third Season, beginning with Episode 15, I think. The episode title was just, "Finn", introducing Lara Cox as the new girl. Lara is an Aussie, but faked a US accent for the role.
That series was one of the very few that had the heroes wearing guns and knives and not being military or cops. And the three main heroines are all easy on the male eye and two wore outfits likely to draw that eye! Oh: in, "Trophies", Marguerite stole a nice switchblade from Burton, the villain. I think it had a horn handle.
The male heroes all had Bowie knives. I never got a close enough look to verify the makes or models. But I think all were from Solingen companies.
If you watch the mentioned scene with Veronica, see if you think her knife was by Fox. I think I saw a very similar Fox in a store or at a gun show.
