Good Classified Sources for BP Revolvers

Noz - I own Piettas and don't much care for them. My new 1858 has a front sight that leans to the left (barrel needs to be realigned to the right); the frame gap for the hammer has too much clearance; the hammer leans over to the left; and the left wooden grip creaked everytime I held it, so I had to use wood filler and sand it to take up the slack. The Pietta is also bulky which I don't much care for, which is why I am stepping up to Uberti.
Good luck

Reputable gun auctions are fine as long as you do your part as a buyer.
1) Do your research on gun value. Figure out what it's worth to you with shipping and go no higher
2) Do your research on the sellers reputation. Chances are if they have 50positve transactions as a seller, your not going to get stung. The inverse is also true. If there is little history to go on, move on.
3) Ask the seller pointed and detailed questions about condition , flaws, wear, mechanics etc. Ask for more pictures as needed. IF you get vague answers like "great shape", move on.
4) Bid/buy ONLY when your satisfied with the above.

Well, I'll venture a nice find. It is advertised on GB as a Navy Arms 1851 Navy .36 steel frame, fitted case, with powder flask, bullet mold, and cap tins.

Whether or not Val Forgett realized it at the time, it is a correct replica Leech & Rigdon with smooth cylinder and part round/ part octagonal barrel, and is a Gregorelli and Uberti pistol (date code [XVII] 1961) to boot!

Bidding started at $200 and is up to $240 for the next bid. No reserve!

If you are a collector, this appears to be a very nice gun. I am not advocating firing this pistol, only because of the replica collector value, not because of any safety concerns.

I have a Pietta L&R so I am not bidding on this pistol.

Happy hunting!

Of my 15 cap and ball revolvers I have bought over the years, only two have been purchased new. The rest have been bought from members of various gun forums. Never have been disappointed in my purchases, always they were as posted or better condition but then again maybe I have had a lucky streak over the last 20 years. If I feel someone is trying to hide something or is being devious I walk away from looking.. I have sold four of them over the years in various gun forum, even here and try to describe their condition honestly and have good clear pictures. I have had no complaints, if something doesn't feel right to you then it is best to walk away. I use my gut feeling and rarely has it let me down. As far as Gunbroker and Auction Arms a lot of the BP guns listed on these sites are overpriced(a lot of them priced over what you could buy it new for)and some have up for sale for years literally. All the good deals, most of them BIN's are gone within a day of posting usually. Just my experience during the last 20 years.

I would suggest going to a large Civil War reenactment or N-SSA skirmish. Used guns can be found among the sutlers there. This has the advantage of letting you inspect the gun in person, and also to bargain for a better price. You can also compare the offerings of different sellers, all in one place.

Cap and ball revolvers, new and used, are bargains in the gun world. This is due, I think, to them never having been threatened by adverse gun legislation, and therefore, never having been subject to panic buying. Right now, there is also a favorable exchange rate with the euro.

I have been collecting the Ruger Old Army revolvers for some time. They are not reproductions. The ROA is a one of kind modern Percussion revolver. Ruger Engineers did borrow some mechanics from Rogers & Spencer. This is in Bill Rugers book.
The best place to buy Percussion revolvers is at gun shows. Most attendees want semi-auto Wonder 9MMs. The percussion nipples are most likely the problem in used B/P handguns. They may be rusted in place and have to be tapped out. New SS performance Perc. Nipples can cost $40 bucks.
I think Dixie has Rogers & Spencers in stock. The DPS Olimpic models sell for over $1,300 dollars. My R&S Uro-arms is a shooter. rogers.png

I went ahead and purchased a brand new Uberti 1858 with a blued barrel. Should get it this week and will post my thoughts on it.

After perusing through a variety of used gun ads, I decided there was a much greater likelihood of ending up with a problem black powder revolver, than going the new route. Simply too many people today looking to sell a problem item, instead of being upfront.

Received the Uberti 1858 today new in a box. All I can say is it's a real piece of junk! :scrutiny: Terrible action, the cylinder binds up when you least expect it, making it unreliable. The base pin is a task just to remove. Even more problematic is removing and installing the cylinder, which took almost five minutes to get the cylinder installed and aligned with the base pin. Absolutely no room to put that cylinder back in. Way too tight! The fit and finish is unremarkable compared to my Pietta 1858, which is much nicer.

Even with CNC, paint by number machinery, the Italians can't seem produce an outstanding gun. With Pietta, you have a bulky 1858 frame made of soft Euro steel, which seems to bend as soon as you look at it. Hammer screws that are too small for the hammer causing them to lean to the left. On the plus side, all of the Pietta's I have owned have good action and the base pin on the 1858 is much easier to remove, maybe because of the larger clearances?

Overall, Uberti's are overrated and this one is packed and ready to be returned.
