What would be a step up from a SWFA SS 10x42?

For $299 this scope is really pretty amazing. Just wondering what would be considered a step up...with fixed optics? Maybe something with a 35mm tube? Really don't need more magnification.

Vortex Viper PST or Leupold VXR or Trigicon Variables. Slightly better glass, variable and illumination. at twice the price or a little better. Then two or three tiers above that for big $

As far as higher quality glass goes, it is hard to quantify. More light transmission, less fuzzy, less distortion. It just looks clearer. It's the same with cameras. You can buy a a camera lens for $200, and the same company will offer another lens with the same specs for $2500 as a "luxury" lens that is only slightly faster. Look through them side by side, or at ranges >400 yards, and it should be obvious.

However, the SWFA HD is (or was) made in Japan, has upgraded internal mechanisms, and is pretty much a different scope. Many reviewers compare it to the Leupold Mark 4, which is impressive in it's own right.

35mm tube will give you more adjustment, bigger bell will give more light. Leupold VXR is my choice I agree with BIG7:thumbup:

Going forward, I will stick to SWFA scopes. My first, a 16 power fixed made me a permanent customer. Santa brought me an HD 5x20. I love it. Had Santa not brought me the 5-20, I would have purchased another 16. The reticle is perfect on both. It is nice to be able to back off when mirage is an issue. During Christmas, they have discounted pricing. Look every day and early if you want a 5-20. They go fast.
The high dollar scopes at $2K++, are great, but I am not willing to spend that at this time. I looked through a Beast. Don't do that. I would put the SWFA 5-20 against any scope at $2K or less.

I'm not a Leupold fan-boy by any stretch. Mostly I'm a Weaver Micro-Trac kinds guy. But the Leupold VX-R's are really fine. Playing with one has convinced me to buy one for at least one rifle :D
