Hi all-

Looking into picking up a 9mm AR, and I'm specifically looking to duplicate my pretty much stock Windham Weaponry MPC. This is my go-to AR, and I'm looking to maintain the feel and controls as much as possible, but in a 9mm platform. I prefer the Colt-style magazines to the Glocks since they work with last round bolt hold-open where the Glock mags typically do not.

I'm looking at a Colt 6951, and have also considered putting together a Palmetto State gun, except they use a mid-length hand guard, meaning a longer sight radius (I typically prefer iron sights) and a longer forend. I'd like to avoid this if possible.

However, I've found the Colt 6951's are pretty hard to find. I've heard rumors that they produce them only once in a while. If this is the case, I may need to find an alternative.

Can anyone verify if Colt 6951's are produced sporadically? Or are they regularly produced and stocked?

Also, does anyone have any experience with one? I got to play with one (unloaded of course) at the Great American Outdoor Show in Harrisburg, PA last month and haven't been able to stop drooling over them.

Thanks!

Colt has a lot of models listed in their catalog but some of them never get built. One of the problems with Colt, just too small of a company to actually build what they say they are selling. If you were asking for 1000 units they would probably find a way to build them sometime this year. With layoffs I'm thinking you would never see one anytime soon as a civilian buyer.

I checked my distributor and there are none. Who knows, call Colt and ask. They may have one in the back room somewhere.

Edit....There are a few on GB. Expect to be gouged.
Here's one at decent price. Only one I could find.

If you really want one I wouldn't screw around. They could be gone for a long time.

Rock River offers a CAR 9mm, either complete or as a complete upper. Current guns have a dedicated 9mm lower rather than a drop in block. Model 1 sales offers a CAR upper as well.

I'd probably just piece one together myself. I used an RRA upper way back when options were limited to Colt, RRA, and Olympic Arms. I ended up ramping the bolt, swapping the RRA block for a Hahn, the charging handle broke so I swapped it out for a Colt, and I managed to break a receiver extension, but honestly don't remember if it was the RRA or the BM.

Today, I'd probably just get the M1S barreled upper, ramped RRA 9mm bolt from adco, order the stock, charging handle, and LPK from BCM and put it all on a CMMG lower.

Edit: Brownells offers 9mm magazines that are Colt/Metalform clones and work well.

Why???? Isn't a longer sight radius better with iron sights? I owned this PSA for a few months and it was 100% reliable.

Only sold it to get the Glock mag version.

Yes, longer sight radius is better. But I want something that is the same configuration as my primary rifle. Therefore, I want a carbine length handguard and front sight to ensure that the gun is as similar to my Windham as possible.

I've looked into the RRA guns as well, and the CMMG too. The RRA is going for about a hundred more than the Colt, and the CMMG about a hundred less.

However, with the exception of piecing together a Palmetto State gun, I've found that I'll be spending more piecing it together and hoping I can get it to work. I'm good enough with a 5.56 gun to make it run, but I'd rather avoid the hassle in troubleshooting a 9mm gun.

Yowza... I've been tracking prices on these for a bit and they tend to float around the same price. However, a couple weeks ago slickguns.com was showing about a half dozen dealers in stock. Today, just one.

I'm not going to risk it. I pulled the trigger on the Colt from Sportsman Outdoor Superstore. I'll be kicking myself if one slipped through my fingers.

Besides, I'm hoping the Colt will have the better resale value over the CMMG and Rock River Arms... brands that are really only well known among "gun guys".

Thanks all for the input!

I bought an AR6951 a few years ago for $980 at the LE/MIL price.

My understanding is Colt makes them in runs and it appears they go pretty fast. Mines been 100% with Metalform mags. I keep mine configured like my LE6920 and use it as a trainer. I'm about to drop a Geissele SSA-E trigger in it like I have my 6920. Best prices I've found for Metalforms are at PSA, just wait for one of their daily specials, earlier this week they were going for $13 a pop, today they're at $16.99 per.

Sounds like it's good I ordered mine last night. Got a price pretty close to yours. (I was also hoping to get armored pricing but they don't seem to have their armorer purchase program straightened out yet) but at full retail it was doable.

I got some PSA magazines on the way as well. Can't wait to see what this bad boy can do!

Looks like they changed them again a little, mine came with the "handle" rear sight VS the Magpul MBUIS and 2 Colt Marked Metalforms. I'm sure you'll be very happy with it, the Colts run right out of the box. One thing to keep an eye on is the tightness of the barrel nut. When I googled Colt AR6951 issues before buying mine that's the one thing I found periodic reports on (usually described as loose/turning forearm). Sure enough this year after I don't know how many rounds my forearm turned.....5 minutes with an AR wrench and a torque wrench and it's good as new.

I shoot mine..alot as I can crank out 9mm faster on the Dillon than I can .223/5.56 also the 9mm doesn't tear up my AR500 targstets at CQB distances. It's a big hit when I have guys out to shoot, I just tell them to bring extra 9mm and I'll set up one carbine stage we can all run through.

One other word of advice, get the Maglula SMG loader ASAP!!! http://www.maglula.com/product/colt-smg-lula-9mm/ Don't even mess with trying to load the Colt SMG mags barehanded, it isn't worth it.

Good to hear! Personally I'm not a big fan of the Magpul MBUS rear. The way that small aperture flips out of the way just isn't ideal for me. I'll probably add a carry handle to it eventually so it's set up the same as my main 5.56 gun.

I'll also be double checking the barrel nut as well. I've heard some of these horror stories too but thanks for the reminder. Can't wait to get it and run a bunch of ammo through it.

Oh and the UpLula is on the way!
