I have been looking for a pistol caliber carbine for use as a fun rifle and as a home protection rifle. I wanted something in .45 but have not found anything that was really in my price range AND rock solid.

Then I thought about the 9mm Rock River AR. Are they reliable. Are they similar to the Colt design? What type of mags do they use, are they the same as the Colt? Also, is there a magazine block that positions the mag?

Are they reliable and reasonably accurate?

On the AR pistols, is it possible to use the exposed buffer tube as a reasonable substitute for a stock?

Thanks.

I read somewhere that the RRA 9MM upper will not work with an RRA lower that has the two stage match. Is this true, and why? Thanks, AC

9mm bolts hang up on most .223 triggers. Never experianced it myself, but I heard its a bear to get un-stuck. Ramping the bolt fixes this. I use a DPMS hammer in mine, there's no notch at the front of it. I havent had my bolt ramped, yet. Soon though, maybe next payday.

Being blow-back, use of a match trigger may cause bursts.

My RRA 9mm has several thousand rounds through it and it just recently broke the hammerpin (ramping the bolt could prevent this as well). It doesnt feed HPs real reliably, I'm going with a Hahn dedicated block when I have an extra $200 to blow. Otherwise, it runs like a raped ape. I didnt clean it in over 3000 rounds and it was still going. Just a little lube on the bolt was all it needed. And a can of brake cleaner when I finally cleaned it...

My club runs a pistol caliber carbine plate shoot and several guys run the Rock river guns. Mostly they run well but some seem to have reliability problems but I believe that is because they were messing with the guns. You know the type who see themselves as expert gun smith types , but they are not!
Myself and a couple others have the Olympic system. These guns are worth a look, they all seem to run well and there isn't any of the trigger/hammer issues like the RR. I run the RRNM trigger in most of my lowers so that is what runs my Oly 9 upper.
I bought my upper used during the ban and it is set to run the sten mags, either the converted ones with added on part to the mag (allows use of standard mag release) or the plain sten mag with slide in block (and added seperate mag release) . If I was getting into a new set up I would go with the Oly complete setup (upper and lower) flatop with lower made for Glock mags. The sten mags are cheep and work but are real nasty to load and too long for prone or bench work.
