Any one ever cut a shotgun down to minimum length barrel and overall just for a toy? Like this? (non-HighRoad language in video)

I found a CBC trap 12 with a good tight action for 69$ at a pawn shop and this looks like it would put a huge smile on my face for blowing up water jugs and expired produce.:):D I know how to measure a barrel and that is has to be over 18", I would probably go 18.5" for safety and overall needs to be >26", I would probably go 27", again for safety. Anything else to watch out for?

A buddy of mine thinks it's absolutely hilarious to fire his shotguns as though they were giant pistols. Kind of like the above video, just with an intact stock and barrel.

In joining the revery, I noticed three things.

1. It's quite fun, although grossly impractical.
2. The trigger guard might beat up your fingers.
3. If the action release is on the tang, it might cut the absolute hell out of the web of your hand upon recoil, resulting in an improvised bandage and ending that sort of thing for you for the day.

The action release on this model is in front of the trigger guard, so no worries there. I am under no illusions that this project will have any practical purpose other than fun. (I have a Mossberg for that.) I will keep sharp eye and firm grip to keep the trigger guard at bay.

Guilty. I cut down my mossberg 500 to 18.5" and put a pistol grip on it. Why? I don't know. I like how it looks with the vented rib vs the aftermarket 18.5. I get a kick out of shooting it. My dad said almost the same thing as Cooldill, "you just ruined a peferctly good shotgun". I have 2 500's so I don't mind. Will I do this to my humpbacks or Wingmaster? Never!

I forgot to get a before picture, but it looked pretty much like this only with crappier wood. 5bb05ad59a33413604d2377a3c1bbd3e.jpg

And now. 18.5" barrel and 27ish over all. Had a cabelas gift card held used it to pick up a ridiculous bandolier to go with this ridiculous gun. Needs a few more coats of Linseed oil on the wood. I cut down the barrel and then the stock. If I had it to do over again I would do the stock first, into more of a traditional pistol grip and then leave the barrel a little longer to make the overall length. Supossed to help a buddy build fence this weekend and will give it a go then. IMG_2557.jpg

They aren't as useless as you'd think. You can learn to shoot from the hip fairly easily. In college we used to shoot clays with pistol griped 870 from the hand thrower.

You will probably think why did I spend $75 on this... but then again $75 doesn't buy much these days.

Edit, I would recommmed doing it to a NEF or H&R so you can find a stock to put on when you get bored with it. I have an H&R turkey that has not been butchered and its very useful. Short barrel, takes chokes and up to 3.5" shells. I've shot a lot of game with it.

The guy in the video is an idiot. I would not want to be around him when he has a firearm. Shotguns without a buttstock may have some utility but a very small amount. The worse thing though is he didn't put the rabbit out of its misery.

I've seen people shoot AT clays with shotguns such as the one in the video but none of them shot clays. I've also read on forums where people state they do this. I would love for a member of this forum to post a video of themself doing it.

I am betting that when I get bored with it (and I will) I could find someone to buy it for more than I paid, even in its new configuration. I would probably never sell it though, too much risk of someone cutting it down even further and then saying they bought it that way from me. I might gift it to a friend that I trust though.

I would not have done it either. The rabbit seemed to be making it just fine, just a little slow.

I'm sorry OP, guns are not toys. They are tools. You seem to just want to destroy stuff, willy-nilly. I have had a couple of Rem 870 shotguns cut down to 19" (I don't trust BATFE with their measuring stick) and both had a 2-round Choate mag extension. Both were used as HD weapons. I experimented with just a pistol grip as opposed to a full buttstock, but the full buttstock won out hands down.

If you want to destroy stuff, go to a skeet/trap range and pay for a round to destroy 25 clay targets, either skeet or trap. You might even have to learn how to move the gun on a moving target. Imagine that! I doubt you can accomplish that with your cut-down "toy" shooting from the "hip".

If any Left-wing folks see this video, you are the poster boy for them insofar as a loose cannon with a gun (no pun intended) and another reason for them to push for more gun-control legislation. You are doing no favors for us responsible gun-owners. You don't even show a target! You like shooting vegetation?

Grow up, boy. You are the epitome of young people wanting 15 minutes of fame these days, whether on FB or elsewhere.

Come back when you lose your mental huge cohones and can act responsibly.

Yeah, I'm an old man (64) but I still don't entertain fools, and never will.

Flame on, Peat.

Just a little slow? Get real. The merciful thing to do would have been to put the animal out of its misery. Do you know anything about wildlife? We are talking about a rabbit, not my cousin Jingle Dell who is a little slow in a different way.

I think his concern was shooting rabbits out of season, but given the locale in the video and the short distance from the animal, a head shot with a .22 rifle would have put meat in the pot or on the fryer and saved it from a coyote, and if he was shooting a shotgun insofar as noise, a shot from a .22 would not have been of any concern to neighbors or others, in season or not. No need to put a large unneeded load of shot into an animal that seemed to want to come to him.

When I lived in Alaska, when on moose hunting trips, we used to use the afternoons to look for spruce hens (grouse) on back-country gravel roads and shoot them with a .22 pistol from only a few yards away. They were so small, all we used were the breasts dressed out in the field (put the bird on its back, stand on the wings, grab the breast at the lower part of the bird, pull up until free, and place in a Zip-Loc bag. Made good stewed birds with packaged gravy back at camp!

I digress.

Shooting a rabbit with a broken leg out of season? Can't believe a game warden would take issue with it.

expat_alaska, not going to debate anyone on the merits of something like this. Just a point of clarity. It seems like you might be under the impression that the video is mine or the guy in the video is me. It is not.

I don't think anyone thought it was you. You did post it though and obviously liked it.

Yep, sure did. Still do. Looks like an aweful load of fun. With a little luck I will get my fence building done early in the AM and find out for myself.

It was everything I expected and more. At ten yards this thing will make a full can of soda dissapear into thin air. (not literally, I had to go back behind the target stand and pick up some shredded aluminum afterwards) I shot about a box and a half of 7 1/2 and a few rounds of buck and slugs just to see what they would be like. Recoil was heavy as expected, but it was managable, not the massive punch like getting kicked by a horse that some folks had warned me about. We found a dried out gourd/ pumkin about 4" wide in the compost pile and after my side kick had put several rounds through it with her .22 she told me to blow it up with my new toy. I obliged. A great time was had by all. :D:rofl:

Kozak6 metioned watching out for the trigger guard and I was thinking of the front of it on my trigger finger, but I did notice that the back of it hit my middle finger a couple of times. Need to make sure middle finger is up against it when shooting in the future.
