Is the Savage 64 rifle a decent 22 rimfire? I've had good experiences with Savage but do not know anything about the Savage 64.

Yes. It is on par with the low end Marlin 795 or Remingtons. The mags are substantially better than those but aftermarket accessories are limited other than the typical grooved receiver for mounting a scope. Try MCARBO for a spring kit that improves trigger pull and reset.
Do not expect an adjustable trigger in these. For a full report try Rimfire Central forum--I believe that they have a Savage sub forum but it has been awhile since I have been there. Go Hogs.

I have read some mixed reviews on that rifle. Seems like the barrels are fairly accurate for an inexpensive gun. I've read about problems with the magazines. I would rather have a cheap bolt action 22 than a cheap semi auto 22, but I have not seen any bolt action 22's go for 100 bucks.
Thing about cheap .22s is the bolts and semis usually share mags, and they pretty much all CAN have issues. Most consistently reliable cheap .22s are usually the tube feeds, but even those can have their issues.
Actually my experience is that the remington 597s mags, which are notoriously unreliability, were the most reliable of all my .22s.

I've shot a Remington 597 and it was actually pretty reliable. I don't remember any problems. It just had a heavy trigger. The magazine was pretty easy to load.
The good thing I see with this Savage 64 is that Savage usually makes a pretty accurate gun.

I have the Stevens version of this rifle. A Simmons 44 MAG scope was mounted and it shoots amazing groups out to about 60 yards or so. After that the groups open up a bit. No problems with function at all.
