Cleaning your guns or waste of time

I'll be over to visit you as soon as I finish cleaning my car and truck motor, although it may be awhile, probably no need to wait up for me.

I drove the truck to work, wife drove her car to lunch. No matter what anyone says, I don't see how it could hurt to pull the heads and clean all the carbon off the top of the piston and valves every time I use them. I was going to mow the yard, but haven't had a chance to reassemble the lawnmower engine since the last time I used it.

Is it necessary? No.
Does it hurt anything? No.

It's your time and your guns, do whatever makes you happy. If you're not having problems when you're shooting, everything is fine.

Can you really over clean a gun? Is there anything but benefit that comes from cleaning a gun? If so, why not?
Also, I think somebody that is really into guns would enjoy taking hem apart, inspecting and cleaning them, and reassembling them. It fosters a great understanding of your firearm and how it works.

My experience has been that FAR more people are into using them than taking them apart. If you want to see just how little people understand about how their firearms work, start a discussion on how a recoil operated firearm like a 1911 or Glock works, or why a revolver has a taller front sight than a semi-auto of the same caliber.

You could not possibly believe every thing you read or hear do you? This subject has been talked about for ever.
Those who have been in the service ...........know better! I am one that knows better. I could care less what non-cleaners think.
What ever the owner thinks about cleaning is fine with me. Not all brush their teeth either. Personal choice.

Sure. No reason to take care of your equipment that you paid a lot of $ for, and may have to rely on to save your life or hunt with. Also, I heard changing the oil in your car is just a scam to get the oil companies to make more $ off the rest of us dummies too.

I always clean after a range trip, and sometimes clean an unfired carry pistol just to clean the dust out of it, though it's a rare occurrence.

You can 'over clean', IMO, and mostly my cleaning is simply cleaning enough to get the carbon off, and freshen the lube. I really don't want to EDC something dirty enough to leave smuges on my clothes.

Since I live and work within 100 feet of the high tide line, I do tend to lube a bit more heavily than one might otherwise, and sometimes I 'clean' an unfired gun just to freshen the lube.

It depends, among other things, on if the dude actually knows how to clean his gun properly.
Sooner or later the dude is courting failure by not cleaning.
