Hey guys I carry a rifle in the truck. I shoot lots of varmint out the window. Occasionally I'll do a little stalking, may call some coyotes laying on the ground, may hunt a stand here and there. Like to shoot some targets here and there also.
So I've been carrying a howa ranchland 308 in the pickup. No complaignts with it, but the barrel doesn't have enough meat to cut it for my suppressor and I'm about deaf already. I'm better about putting my ears on than ever, but still forget and I didn't buy a suppressor for the heck of it. So I'm working on selling some stuff to buy/build exactly what I want.

I'm not finding anything on the shelf that fits the bill, but I've found a couple routes that may get me there. I'm wondering a few things. And I'm open to suggestions and ideas.

So my needs and goals with explanations.

Chambering is 308 win, non negotiable. I'm trying to keep my calibers down to a minimum. I used to load 40+ calibers and Ive trimmed that down to mainly 4 since having kids (and becoming poor) 45, 308, 300blk, 12gauge.

Compact and reasonable weight, it's got to fit in my sky rack so it doesn't get beat up bad And it's out of sight (within reason). So that's about 40" max without the suppressor in it. I'm thinking a 16" barrel so it will be reasonably balanced, light, and quick when I stalk a dense area. I'm kinda set on that unless someone has a good reason to talk me out of it.

Accuracy, I'm no benchrest shooter, so anything sub Moa is fine for this, but It can never group too tight since I'm gonna have human error to add at to it.

I like the tactical stocks like magpul hunter. It seems to be the most light weight in that style. I also prefer the larger capacity detachable magazines.

Budget. Around $1000 (I have an optic and bipod) I can't see carrying anymore than that around in the truck. We're talking already over 2k with the scope and bipod on it not counting the can.

So a couple that come really close to fitting the bill are:

Tikka T3 CTR, barrel is a touch long, I can fix that for $100. Stock is close enough, I can get a bigger mag, but that isn't a deal breaker. I hear these are good shooters out of the box. Weight is great.

Remington 700 sps aac. Comes in a 16.5" model. I can throw a magpul hunter stock and mag kit on it and pretty much have what I want. I've read lots of disgust if that's the right word for the new 700's. I don't know if it's a ford chevy thing or there's a chance the accuracy may be sloppy and the trigger suck. I guess the good thing is being a 700 you can mod it in any way easily. If I changed anything with the gun it would be a lighter barrel.

The magpul 700 would be too much money after I cut the barrel down.

What's some other options or flaws with my reasoning.

Any other cool stocks under 3# and not out of hand budget wise. I looked at that archangel stock, but it's crazy heavy!

I know the 16" barrel is short. I run pretty fast powder though since I have some other 16" 308's.

Thanks guys!

This is just what ive seen, but the newest 700s have been as good as anything on the rack in thier price range. Im comfortable recommending any made after 2015 atleast, perhaps older. My 2008 and 2011 both had issues.
If you like the 700sps I say grab it.

If your willing to go to the 300blk the RAR Ranch is hard to beat.
Or maybe get a RAR predator in .308 and have its barrel lopped and threaded its tube should be thick enough.

Savage Hog Hunter will fit all your requirements except the preference for external magazines. MSRP is 595 so well below your price range.

Personally I would go after an older model 700 SP or SPS. I don't like how the new Remington management is handling manufacturing so I would go after something a bit older.

The third option is you could always build a rifle. Get a Boyd or Magpul stock. Find a halfway decent Savage barrel and put something together. The scope and suppressor are the biggest money drains so building one wouldn't be much more.

Sounds like you need an AR-10 to me.
Can you buy a good quality one in the 1000 range? I'm not opposed. I have never owned an AR10. I've never know enough about them to feel like I knew how to buy one.

Check out mrgundealer.com. They are a local shop for me but have great online prices. They carry most brands too. I'm not affiliated with them, just a very happy customer.

I'm really impressed with my Ruger American I have a M24, a Larue OBR heavy, and several other custom long range 700's. For what you are doing, I would look at the predator. Other stocks are available for it. Maybe even the Mossberg MVP- I have the thunder ranch in 223 and it does 1 MOA, also with a short threaded barrel.

I'm sure your muzzle OD is at least .550, and 1/2-28 is fine for .308. That doesn't leave much shoulder, but I have solutions for that:

If it will be at least .640" OD when cut down, we can do 5/8-24. The first barrel pictured is my M770, which I cut to 18". The barrel OD was .650".

Certainly don't let me stop you if you just want to buy another rifle, but if you'd like to thread the one you have an save money, I can get you set up. PM me if you're interested.

An AR10 does sound like it fits your usage but they are heavy. Those tactical style bolt action stocks are really heavy as well. A 12 lb gun with scope and suppressor would kill the utility of it to me. I would personally get a tikka t3 light, leave the stock alone to save weight, and get someone to shorten, shoulder, and thread it like machIV showed. Tikkas come with a really tough integral ring system that would be good for the rough handling it's going to get

Even hearing the phrase "truck gun" makes me cringe. About 14 months ago, I was in the process of moving and had a bunch of stuff in cab of my pickup. I came out to go to work one morning and it was all gone. I had a Colt 6920 with a Aimpoint CompM4, the Remington 870 that was the first 4473 I ever filled out and as such irreplaceable if even just for the sentimental value, an el cheapo Romanian AK, and a Glock 19 stolen, as well as a bunch of other stuff. It is the guns I miss the most and even over a year later, I still get that hollow, nauseous feeling--you know, the one where it feels like your stomach just flipped and you're about to wretch. Aside from putting down my dog or putting my mom in the ground, it is the worst feeling I've ever had. On that note, I have to recommend against keeping a firearm in the truck--esp a $2000 rifle with an NFA stamp attached to it. Reporting a rifle stolen sucks bad enough without having to explain a missing suppressor to the feds. There is good choices for what you want, but I would highly recommend you bring it inside with you at night.

I can build a nice AR-10 right now for $450 without the buttstock.

Complete AeroPrecision 18” SS upper = $299
Complete Tennessee Valley AR-10 lower = $138
Add whatever kind of buttstock you want.

You can build the same gun. If you were to try and buy that gun it would cost you $700-$1100.

Full disclosure: I doubt it will be as accurate as the Hog Hunter. But it will be accurate.

There's no way you're assembling an AR10 with aero parts for $450, not going to happen not even in partial. Complete 18" Aero M5 uppers are going in the $500-600 range, just the upper. Also, I wouldn't plan on it pinning into a Tn Valley lower. I tried pinning an M5 upper to a DPMS lower and it was a no-go, front pin bosses made to different widths. Best to buy a matched set and build them out or buy a complete gun.

I have to say, when I read the initial post I immediately thought "Hog Hunter". I got mine in .223 awhile ago mostly for the iron sights.

Sorry to hear about that MTMilitiaman. It's good of you to share your experience so others can consider what could happen. I don't keep anything in the vehicle long-term also for these reasons.

The guns were out of sight. Not much I could do to get the TV out of sight and I think that is what drew them to my truck. The truck was locked, and no, I didn't have any gun oriented stickers.

Ouch. I have a friend that got a revolver stolen out his truck a few years ago. His revolver was out of sight, but his laptop bag on the rear seat was not.

Hmm I believe it measured .610 at the 16" mark. I can check again though. Do you think there is any risks with running an adapter and just threading for 1/2-28? I remember I was pretty disappointed after I read it needed to be .730 for 5/8-24.

Nope, do it all the time, up to and including .300 win mag barrels. At .610, you won't need a collar for a shoulder with 1/2-28, either.

If you leave it out where people can see it, someone will want to steal it.

I had a great video of a guy stealing a phone out of a van parked in front of my work. The owner left it out on the holder thing. The thief walked by, saw it, stole it. It took less than 20 seconds.

I saw a video of 4 guys jumped out of a van, stuck 2x4's through the wheels, and picked up a full sized Harley and threw it into the van. 30-40 seconds, tops.
