What is this round?

Definitely not 303 as the 303 was a rimmed and tapered cartridge (I have plenty) My vote is also for 8mm Mauser. Bullet is likely in the ~190-200gr weight.

Buddy of mine was taking fire from this round in Afghanistan. He grabbed a few after the guy was neutralized. He was wondering what it was. I told him I could find out here .

Looks like a 8x57 without seeing it next to a ruler marked in metric. The bullet looks silver on my screen. If so it's one of the earlier loadings. Doesn't look Turk. There were middle eastern countries who used it and Greece.

If you have a caliper 3 measurements would make certain. The rim diameter, bullet diameter, and case length. My first thought was 8mm Mauser as well

"...from this round..." With, not from.
The '3' indicates Ulyanovsk Machinery Plant State Production Association, 2 Metallistov St. Ulyanovosk 432031, Russia. Still thinking 8mm Mauser too though. Russians loaded everything and supplied everybody in the Middle East.

No, it ain't.
The pictured round is a 7.92x57 (8mm) Mauser round, made in Czechoslovakia in 1951. This is 200% fact, no other identification. The headstamp uses one of a number of factory symbol codes used for export contracts.

I’m placing my money on jonnyc.

8x57 Mauser was my guess also, ( I reload 8x57). Was looking at this thread last night and even held up an 8x57 round from my K-98 in front of the posted picture on the screen and did a visual comparison. They sure looked similar. Was gonna post my guess last night but it was getting late. Now I'm wondering what 8 x 57 rifle was being used against our guys in Afghanistan?

Thanks for the information guys. He didn't have a lot of time to hang out in the nest but said all he remembers was that it was a longish semi auto rifle with a scope. With you guys information I'm kinda thinking maybe it was a Zastava M76?

My BIL used to have a Romak PSL in 7.62x54r with the issued sniper scope. We put a couple 100 rounds through it and the accuracy was great. 1" groups at 100yds with surplus ammo it liked. Many times several holes touching. So I'd think the M76 is as good or better. Zestava makes good firearms. Many people think they are a Russian Dragnnov but they are completely different. Quickest way to tell the diff is look at the mag position. Dragunov has space between the trigger guard and mag. The PSL style the mag is right against the Tg/mag latch.
