They arrived this morning, Guess what ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 1" , 25.4mm :cuss::cuss::cuss::fire:. Is it me? cos it seems the whole world is in a state of D.G.A.F ( Don't give a **** ) or are we just plagued with liers. I think im gona start a list of dealers and gunsmiths who really DO know what they are doing, and a name and shame for the rest. LOL I can just imagine the scene at an engine builders. Yes Sir we have your pistons but they are a little large, but you can rub them down with a file... Or That 30odd6 will fit your 308 just bash it in with a hammer, its just a tad longer...
Sorry guys im ranting.

Isnt that basically an old Lee loader?

bummer they werent the right rings.
I dunno if this would be interesting or not, but ive found that the chinese aluminum rings are a little too WIDE for most 1" scopes. push come to shove switching to weaver cross slot bases and getting a set of "airgun" rings might be an option.

ET, quit beating your head against the proverbial brick wall and find a local machine shop. I've challenged a few of those guys over the years with "I heard this can't be done". Results are very often quite rewarding.

Did wonder about airgun mounts, but they all tend to be 9mm dovetail or Weaver rail type, either way a bit untidy. Hi RD. I have tried local machine shops I either get a flat no or 3 to 4 months lead time. So im going to try and make my own rings, It seems the only real problem is centring the 1" rings to give 26mm top to bottom with nip, then milling the sides to match. As the weaver/Leupolds mounts I have have lateral adjustment an the blocks can be shimmed I think im in with a good chance. Ill keep you posted.

Well not really, 0.6mm needs cutting not lapping, So an end mill or reamer would be best, Then bar lap to get good contact. The other problem with trying to lap that much out is maintaining location and pressure evenly on both rings. One more thing to consider is the nip, you need to set the ring tops to give nip at 26mm not 25.4, by doing this the ring becomes oval and contact area with the lapping bar would be very small and on the sides, so making good alignment difficult.

That makes sense, and i hadnt considered the rings ovaling out either.
Im curious as to how this project will come out :D

Well the plan is this.
Shim the ring tops to give a vertical dimension 25.9mm
Mount in a small rotary milling table
Centre the on the X-X axis
Bring a 20mm end mill into light contact
now rotate the table on a 13mm radius this should mill the sides of the rings increasing the hole to 25.9 + or -
now mount on rifle lap with 26mm bar.

Ive had to order a milling table so progress will be slow till it arrives. Once ive proven if it works I can produce more, reason being as someone here said the 26mm scopes were common in Europe a few years ago, and there are many high end used scopes such as Schmidt & Bender for just a couple hundred pounds.
Ill take pictures as the work progress's and try posting them.

Hello Lads,, First " A Happy New Year " to one and all.
Progress report ;- I just did the ring mod from 25.4 to 26mm and if im honest was the easiest mod ive ever done, centred the rings in a 3 jaw chuck on a cheap Chinese lathe, set up a small boring bar and took one 0.25mm pass. then wrapped 600grit paper round a wood dowel couple of passes to polish any roughness out, put the mounts on my rifle dropped on the scope and just a tiny press down and it sat there like it grew there. Now I have just what I wanted. Neat , low mounts the Ob bell sits about 5mm off the barrel ..... Im that pleased that I now know it can be done easily a few more of my rifles will be getting 26mm tubed . The 26mm are a lot cheaper to buy over this side of the pond as everyone wants 1" or 30mm. LOL guess I need search Ebay for a Schmidt and Bender jacket now lol lol

Thanks Wulfie,,, Well my success has spured me on to another idea,, a mounting rail to take the rail type fitting used for brake guns. Again lot available but not many brakes guns used here, and not so many in Europe as there was, so again good scopes at low prices. What I thought was something like a dovetail to weaver change over mount but could machine it to take the Euro rail, could be dovetail or weaver. OMG am I talking myself into a lot of work jeeeez my head will never save my butt

We talking about the scopes with the dovetail slots built in? Those always looked cool to me.

Well I was thinking of the type that use a solid dovetail rail on which the clamps slide, but it would work with a slotted rail too
OOOOooo ok i dont think ive seen any like that besides some of the old Bushnells, gunna take a wild guess and say they arnt that popular out here.

No I would agree, not that popular here too, but still good scopes no one wants so prices are good,,,, lol lol yeh im a cheap skate lol
