While visiting family over the holidays, my Uncle informed me he would be giving me some of his guns. Of course I was happy to receive them. I credit my Uncle for my interest in guns. One of the guns is a CVA Hawken rifle. He said he had fired it may be a handful of times. He mostly bought it to hang it up on a wall.

So I did my research and learned about it and came here also to learn about Black Powder shooting. I cleaned the gun. I took off the brass hardware and polished it as it was heavily tarnished. Bought some Bore Butter, caps, .490 balls, a nipple wrench and a capper at Academy. Still need to buy a ball puller, a ball starter, and of course the powder and powder measure. Plus will buy pillow ticking patches. They had no powder and neither did two gun stores in the area I frequent. I was looking for pyrodex. But now I will go online and buy actual black powder. I can't wait to shoot it. Always wanted to get into BP shooting and this is a good way to start. In the meantime I will keep reading and learning.

Mini 50/60grs of real 3Fg BP (much better than Pyrodex), .490 balls, 0.009" patches and you'll be a happy guy with this rifle...

Have a nice day. ;)

I have always used Pyrodex, just because it was easier to get locally. Usually 90 grains of RS for hunting, 50 grains of Pyrodex P is a very accurate lite load.
I've used both .490 and .495 balls with ticking patches of varying thickness. The rifling in mine was rough and tore patches at first, about 100 rounds smoothed it out.
