For some reason I have a desire for a rifle with these attributes and I'm not sure what I'm looking for. Anything you guys know that fits the bill?

- short, light and "handy"

- semi auto

- no pistol grip

- NO MAG STICKING OUT THE BOTTOM (something like a stock sks captured mag is the max or tubular preferred)

- centerfire

- moderate caliber

- decent iron sights

- good reputation

I have an sks and this almost fits the bill but it is heavier than I am wanting for this itch.

Thanks guys.

I'll say an HK 770 in .308 ...or an even handier SL-7 in .308 with the 3-round mag, either would fit your description perfectly. Now the problem; can you find one and are you willing to pay the tariff?

Can't think of any tube feds that would meet your criteria, but here's a few others that might.
Add a 7400 carbine to that mix and I think you’ve got a great list. E13F18B1-A65B-4D6C-89BB-ED0CAC00CD30.jpeg

The 7400 was the first one I thought of too.

Also might want to look at the ARES SCR with a 3 rnd mag. Its an ar15upper on basically a Remington 1100 lower. Very neat rifle if you use the right furniture on it.

I thought about the Remington and the Winchester 100, but the OP said he wanted something lighter and handier than a stock SKS, which I think these are a bit longer and heavier. But, ya, if deer are on the menu, a .308 7400 would do the trick nicely.

Is the mini 30 lighter than a SKS? I haven't had much interaction with the mini's but the best I recall they were fairly bulky.

I think there are two types of Ruger .44 mag carbines. The Deerfield which has a mini 14 type action mag fed and the old model 44 carbine which looks like a 10/22 with an operating rod and I think its tube fed.

Also don't forget saiga's. 7.62x39, 5.56,.308 win ,12 Gage, and more if you can find one

Both .44 Ruger carbines used detachable rotary magazines. Both can also be tough to track down, as they have a bit of a cult following and those who have them tend to hang onto them. The Deerfield is the rarer of the 2 and quite a bit more expensive.

There are always the convoluted COMPLIANT AR15s. Some have no pistol grip and flush mags.
I think they still use standard uppers which would give you a very wide choice of calibers.

My 20" barrel Norinco SKS is 8.5 lbs with bayo and sling attached, per my little kitchen scale. It might squeeze down to just under 8 lbs. if those two items were removed.

The Ruger Mini I wouldn't mind having is the 16" barrel Mini-14 Tactical. The flush magazine version is claimed to weigh 6.7 lbs. I'd probably take the flash suppressor off and that would shorten it to an even 36" or less.

I've thought about getting an SU-16A, B, or C model off and on over the years. It looks like a really nifty centerfire gadget. I just can't get myself past the polymer receiver. If that had an alloy receiver, I would already own one. :)
