Has anyone bought/used the CMP 1911 mags? They have some on their e-store and I was going to buy some but apparently my club membership info is out of date and I need to resend it. If they're quality mags I'll resend my info, if not I'll stick with Midway/Brownells.

If they are GI mags with a NSN on them, they are junk. Would not buy unless I just wanted authentic mags for a US property marked 1911. For good mags, get either Wilson or McCormick.

Here are the mags in question. I know everyone always praises Wilson and McCormick, and I don't have the slightest doubt that they perform flawlessly but neither have the Springfield Armory and Brownell's mags I run. Nevertheless, I'm in stocking-up mode on 1911 mags since there's a Gold Cup on my horizon.

You get what you pay for, and a good pistol is no place for an unreliable, or even "questionable" mag. I have 1 of those mags like in the picture- it goes with my Remington Rand 1911A1. I paid $50 (a deal) on an original 1911 (not A1) mag with lanyard loop to go in my property marked 1911 as well. I didn't buy either cause they were good- I bought them because they go with those old war horses. During the "days of yore" when various Special Operations units used "hot rod" 1911 type pistols, they used mags like Wilson. If I was to carry, or otherwise use ANY 1911 for self defense or competition, you can bet it would be a Wilson or McCormick mag inside it.

$8 for UNUSED GI MAGS in wrapper is a good deal. If they "do not appear as pictured" and are beat-to-hell then, no, would not buy.

Its quite amazing how many people want to cheap out on the most important part of a semi-auto.

Without good mags you own a single shot gun, or a huge headache!

I was just asking about the quality- they are USGI mags after all.

And re: appearance- there are YouTube videos of these being unwrapped. They're in sealed plastic bags and wrapped in gun paper they're rust free and have a brand new appearance.

That being said, FL-NC's report about them being "junk" is apparently shared by many 1911 shooters and these mags have poor reviews across numerous retailers. They're apparently known for feeding issues. I may pick a couple up just to have them, stick to the mags I have now that work well, and pick up some Wilson and McCormick and see how those perform.

The "word on the street" is that the CMP mags are CheckMate GI feed lipped mags. They work pretty well with ball ammo, but don't work so well with semi-wadcutters and hollow point ammo.

Top Gun Supply is usually my source for CheckMate mags https://www.topgunsupply.com/magazines/1911/check-mate.html

I use a lot of CheckMate mags, but my default mag is Wilson, and McCormick also makes good mags. I'll note that while all the mags in the Wilson and McCormick line-ups are good mags, they have to have a "worst" mag in each of their line-ups.

Not counting 10 rounders from each maker, Wilson's worst mag is their 8 round 47D, while McCormick's worst mag is the Shooting Star. Both are very popular mags, and are pretty good, but within their line-ups they are not their best options.

I disagree that they won't work with hollow points, it's WCs they might have trouble with, might. Assuming they are the same as the Check-Mate "GI" mag they currently make they will feed hollow points just fine.

They work for me and my 1911's. I bought 5 in 2016 and 10 last year. They feed my powder coated 200 grain SWC's just fine. I've put 100's of rounds through a couple of them without any issues. They don't work any better than my McCormick or Wilson mags...

I was about to get some of those to get a try, too late they are gone.

I have to disagree with FL-Nc (2nd post). I have placed two orders of these mags from CMP and all of them have worked perfectly in any 1911 I've used them in. Think about this my friends, would the federal government deliberately go out and buy cheap defective magazines, and then issue them to officers and NCO's authorized to carry a 1911A1. No way! These CMP mags are excellent for everyday range and practice use and are just plain good! Would you use one in your carry pistol, only you can decide that? Otherwise, the only drawback is they're 7 round mags, unlike the Wilson and others.

For what it's worth, when they last bought a 1911, the Colt M45A1, the Government spec'd Wilson 7 rounders.

For what it's worth, Wilson has sold Checkmate mags branded as Wilson. Their Combat Service mag was made by Checkmate. I don't see them available any longer however. I've never found a reason to by a $40 magazine when a $20 magazine will work. One just needs to pay attention to the ammo they run.

I know Wilson has a reputation among 1911 shooters as the best money can buy and I'm not discounting that. If all you do is run ball checkmates work very well. I've tested about 25 of them (7 rnd) in 3 different guns and they all functioned without issue.

Because I don't carry a 1911 all of my mags are Checkmate.

CheckMate makes a lot of OEM mags for a variety of 1911 makers, and there are a lot of 1911 makers. The supply line seems to have had a lot of kinks in it over the past year or two.

Note all the "out of stock" CheckMate varieties at a top CheckMate retailers such as Top Gun Supply https://www.topgunsupply.com/magazines/1911/check-mate.html

There is something to be said for the easy availability of mags from places like Wilson, McCormick, and Tripp. However, I don't even know if any of those companies actually make the mags with their own stamp on them. Of course, CheckMate has such a wide variety of mag styles it's probably hard to keep all of them in inventory.

The owner of Thunder Mountain Custom ( http://shop.1911parts.com ), another big retailer of CheckMate mags, has commented CheckMate is concentrating on one particular mag (I can't remember which, but suspect it was their hybrid lipped 7 rounders), and every direct order they get from an individual for something else jams up their supply line and makes if difficult for the retailers to get the mags they want.

I encourage folks, if you like CheckMate mags, order them from a retailer like Top Gun Supply, Thunder Mountain Custom, Joe's MagMania, or even those from CMP (if that is the mag you want), and not from CheckMate direct. CheckMate is a fine manufacturer, but retail isn't their strong suit.
