45 acp barrel leading

Pm me your address and I’ll send you a few of what I cast and shoot with success.

If your bore slugs out @ .4527 then yes a .453 is what you need . If your buying & not casting your own see if someone will sell you unsized bullets . Softer alloy in the BHN 10 range for 45acp pressures works better than linotype . You also might consider tumble lubing with White Label 45-45-10 . Commercial casters love hard alloy & lube that ships well . The 45-45-10 is 45% allox , 45% wax & 10% mineral spirits . No where near as messy & much cheaper than Lee Liquid Allox . I shoot a bunch of lead thru my 1911's as I shoot Bullseye . My guns all have Kart , IMI , Colt NM or Barsto barrels & other than a trace of lead around the throats don't lead .enough to worry about . Good dies , Lyman " M " expander & taper crimp to .469 no problems . I am not a fan of the Lee FCD as I've seen them create more problems than they solve . I've got one in 38 special , threw the guts away & just use the body with the carbide ring to size my 38 special wadcutter brass . No sense in FL sizing just to have to expand the neck so I can seat a HBWC . Light taper crimp after that & I'm good . BTW White Label is on Ebay & a quart which will last for years is around $20 IIRC .

Thinking outside the box, I like it. :)

OK, so stupid question: How can you tell that you have leading? Accuracy issues? Do you look in the barrel and can you see lead building up on the rifling?

and if it's real bad it will
Latest news
Leading issue was solved with .453 lead boolits of 7 brn and hand lubed with Bens Red.
Thanks to all who helped me with this quest!
glad it worked out.

Doublehelix,
In my case the rifling starts disappearing.
You can feel it as you push a Hoppes patch down the barrel.
It does not disappear with a brush
It requires choreboy and elbow grease to remove
As others said accuracy will begin to go south.

Before I got on top of the leading whys and wherefores, I’ve had it so bad in my RUGER Blackhawk you couldn’t even see the rifling. But that’s another story.

I kept the 45 fairly clean by cleaning the barrel after every range session. I only shoot boolits in my 1911.

Glad to hear you chime in, my friend, 2011redrider! It’s been a long road but we’ve learned a lot over the last year, haven’t we?

Yeap Fit is King!

And these test were only 10 shots each but the proof is in the picture.

Continuing this quest
I tried one coat of bll (Bens liquid lube), but got some leading.
Figuring it might not be thick enough, I then tried two coats of bll. It did the trick and shot lead free.
The quest continues.

Wrong size bullet, bullet to soft , bullet lube not good, powder burns to hot, speed is to fast. These are some of the reasons you get leading in the barrel.

what was the rest of the load, if you don't mind? powder, primer, col, crimp, case brand, bullet weight and type

Murf, you are always welcome old friend
Powder: Red Dot
Primer: Rem LPP
OAL: 1.275
Crimp: none other than what Dillon SDB 4th stage die produced
Case brand: mixed (but I still have on reloading bench if you need to know and can check tonight. ProbablyRemington as it is my favorite)
Boolit: 230 gr NOE RN 7 brn (range scrap) sized to .453
Lube: Bens LL
Velocity: earlier test showed around 850 fps but I would have to get to my book to be sure.
Let me know if you need anything else.

The other option is to use coated (Hi-Tek) bullets.

This. Since I switched to coated bullets for my handguns, I've found zero lead in the barrels after 100+ round sessions. This is with 231 and TG. Dunno why I waited so long to try them.
