I have had one since the first of the year.
I have hunted hogs with and it is very effective.
With Hornady 250gr, it is cloverleaf at 100 yds.
Extremely accurate, very easy to shoot, light, easy to carry.
The only thing I don't care for is the magazine.
I would prefer a 10 round mag, if it were available.
If you have a need for it, buy it.
It is an awesome rifle.

I did my research and looked at the 45/70 and the 450.

I went with the 45/70 1895 GBL lever action Marlin. Im a lot faster with a lever when it comes to a follow up shot, than a bolt gun.

VERY accurate also.

I have a ruger ranch rifle in .450. I like it a lot but ammo is still kind of hard to find. Cabelas and Field and Stream are supposed to have it but they are out of stock a lot, and the last box I got the price had gone up significantly. I'm sure you can do better shopping online.

Its a very handy rifle, easy to carry and easy to shoot out of a treestand. I have taken one deer with mine. 150lb doe, at roughly 100yds. She was quartering towards me and it went inside the near shoulder and exited the rear of the offside ribcage, breaking ribs on both sides. I can't imagine not getting full penetration on any deer within reasonable range. Mine is very accurate as well, much better than I can shoot most days.

The muzzlebrake tames the recoil pretty well, but also makes it very loud. I used to never wear hearing protection while hunting and after the shot on that doe my ears rang for awhile. I ended up buying a set of walker electronic muffs to wear in the future.

Try over at http://www.450bushmaster.net/. There are several guys running the Ruger Rifles in 450 Bushmaster.

450 Bushmaster at present it much better for reloaders. Hornady and Remington each only offer one load each; no of the other major ammo makers are loading it yet. There are a few other small boutique loaders also offering it but still not a big selection. That said there are lots of options if you willing to roll your own. This is especially true of the Ruger Rifles since they use a magazine that is longer than your standard AR magazine that 450 BM was designed for. This lets you run loads that are longer than the standard OAL of 2.26 inch which can let you get a bit more out of the cartridge, especially with the heavier bullets.

Can somebody explain to me why Ruger seems to have such an irrational fanaticism for low capacity magazines?

That rifle was designed specifically for certain areas of the country that used to be muzzle loader and shotgun only. Some of those places have recently modified their laws to allow some center fire rifles with restrictions on the cartridge design. The intent of the law changes was to allow straight walled revolver cartridges like 357 mag, 44 mag and 45 colt to be fired in rifles. But the way the law is written cartridges like 45-70 are included. Most hunters don't want a bolt rifle with a mag that protrudes far below the stock. And some states limit mag capacity to 5 rounds or less for hunting.

The 450 BM fills a role and if I lived in a state with those restrictions that rifle would be my top pick. You see people often describe such rifles as "thumpers". The only thing they thump is the shooters shoulder. If someone lives in a state where legal a 6.5 CM, 7-08, or 308 would "thump" any game animal including hogs and bear much harder with a fraction of the recoil and at less cost.

Ruger does offer their 223, 7.62X39, 308, and 6.5 CM American rifles in versions that take higher capacity magazines. The 223 will accept any AR magazine, the 7.62X39 any Mini-30 magazine and the 308/6.5CM any of the Accuracy International style 3, 5, 6, or 10 round magazines.

I have an opinion. Whether that's good or bad is your call. But at least it's free.

450 Bushmaster is an interesting cartridge and a great idea for hogs. As mentioned above, for addressing state hunting regulations that limit cartridge length, the 450 BM brings something quite useful to the table. The Ruger American Ranch seems to be a good rifle and there has been a lot of praise for the Ruger American series.

I don't like a bolt action rifle cartridge that headspaces on the case mouth. I can't really articulate a clear reason for my dislike and I am not aware of headspacing being a problem in this rifle, but that is what has kept me from buying one.

Reason many Midwest states prohibit necked rifle rounds for deer is due to flat ground, close proximity to nearby farm buildings, livestock, roads, and farmers/equipment in the fields, & highly populated rural areas. Necked rifle round can carry as far as 7 miles, straight wall cartridges, shotgun slugs, handgun rounds won't travel as far.

There are about 5-to-6 States that were once shotgun only, that have approved these bigger rounds in the last couple years. Gun show dealers tell me they can't get enough 450 Bushmaster uppers for gun shows in these states when hunting season gets close. One dealer told me he sold out (over 100) last year and could have sold twice that many if he had more. 450 Bushmaster ammo gets extremely hard to find when the hunting season starts.

I'm sure Ruger has done their marketing research as well and that's why you see them offering an AR in 450.
