Hearing aids

The VA audiologist made a second mold of my ears and sent them in to have ear plugs made.
She said it was a common thing as the VA wants to help you protect what hearing you have.
She even let me choose what color I wanted.
I just told her I was a shooter.

I've got new VA hearing aids here recently, and and my audiologist had them made so that they shut down on a certain decibel that is detrimental to what's left of my hearing. They work really good, and I can even place my muffs over the top of them.

I made an appointment today for a hearing test and new hearing aids. I had to go to the VAMC anyway for a CPAP check. They issued me a new one! Then we went to Hutchin's BBQ. It was a good day.

Good idea to wear the muffs over the hearing aids, because the hearing aids have an open drain canal (for lack of a better term) so they don't block sound all that well even when they shut down.

I did the same thing, when I was fitted for my hearing aids, I had them make a set of molded ear plugs for shooting. I absolutely love them. Ear muffs get hot and sweaty, plus they put pressure on my shooting glasses against the side of my head. After a full day of competition, I got to the point where I wanted to throw my ear muffs as far away as I could possibly throw them!

To be clear, these *replace* my hearing aids when shooting. I also will sometimes "double-bag" my ears by adding the muffs over the ear plugs. Great when things get really loud and I want to tune out the world, or when it gets cold, they help keep my ears warm!

Seriously though, if you have a chance to get custom molded ear plugs for shooting, don't hesitate!

In the 90's I purchased a kit to make the molded ear plugs for competitors at our club matches. They are great on the range! Never thought about asking the VA audiologist for the molds they made for my hearing aids, but will do so next time in. Thanks for the heads up, PWC.

Where I hunt, we have an abundance of large rattlers and I prefer electronic muffs for hunting so that I might hear a rattler should one choose to rattle (They don't all offer that courtesy:what: however.). Love the molded plugs for range duty. The electronic muffs also allow me to hear surrounding noises that I would otherwise miss.

The hole in the hearing aid is so they don't build pressure in the ear canal.
If there wasn't a hole the air pressure could build up and become very painful.

hps1, I do the same as we have some Mohave Green rattlers out here and they are very aggressive, (not as large) the electronic muffs give me a slight edge in warning.

I've heard those Mojave's are pretty aggressive. Fortunately the diamondbacks down here, not so much. I've only had two actually take after me in 60+ years of hunting.

Sometimes the molded earplugs have a tab that attaches to a cord. Be sure that that tab doesn't interfere with the inside of your favorite muffs. Otherwise, a little surgery on the earplugs might be required.
