44 mag mid range target loads unique vs blue dot

I have used both powders for my 44 Magnums. But I used way more Unique than Blue Dot for my handguns, but my Puma seemed to like Blue Dot better (or I did). I can't give a definite answer, BD vs U, as I worked up accurate loads for both in my 5, 44 Magnums (mostly 240-265 gr. cast bullets). Light loads of Unique seemed more consistent in accuracy than Blue Dot and I used Unique a lot for my other 4 handgun cartridges...

Another vote for Unique. I use it to fuel my mid-range/paper-punching .41 mag loads. I think it's just about optimal for stuff like that. With Blue Dot loaded to similar power levels, you're likely going to get slightly more recoil, more flash, and less consistent ignition/velocities.

Both will work fine. (BTW, a .41 is not a .357 nor a .44). BlueDot will fill the case a bit better and can give slightly more velocity if needed. I usually prefer BD in my reduced loads, but I would not be afraid of using Unique if velocity is not important.

.

No, but it works well in midrange .357 and full power .45 Colt loads. Both of which have a lot of extra case space at similar power/pressure levels.

True it’s funny I never considered be86 and I have several pounds of it for my 9mm

I shot 18 test loads in .45 Colt with MBC 255 Gr coated SWCs and BE-86 after work today. Working up a load. Looking good.

I have a midrange .41 Mag load with True Blue, but have never loaded any midrange .44 Mag loads, that is what my .44 Spl is for.

I use 8.0 gr. of Unique with 240 or 250 gr. LSWCs for .44+P loads.
I use 10.0 gr. of Unique with 240 gr. XTPs for milder mag loads.
I use 19.6 gr. of 2400 with 240 gr. XTPs for my hottler handgun loads and rifle loads.
I have no experience with Blue Dot.

Unique has proven to give very accurate medium loads from my SBH. 9.0 grains under a 240 grain laser cast bullet gave 1.5" groups at 25 yards. I never even bothered to try a different charge or bullet as 1.5" or better with a revolver and I am happy.

9gr unique rmr 240gr plated.

SW 629 classic with supported forearm

Not done testing but last range trip with that gun I had an issue that didn't allow me to continue testing

While not a real mild load this worked good for me in an old 3 screw Blackhawk, 20.5 grs. Hercules 2400 under a 240 gr. Hornady XTP. Max is 22grs. in my old Lyman manual and 22.2 grs. is max in an old Speer. I felt no need to abuse the old girl or myself...
