While shooting a club match today I picked up some Speer .40 S&W brass that looked brand new. It was once fired at the match. I never found out who was shooting it so all I know is what's on the headstamp.

This once fired brass looks like it's been wet tumbled. There is no discoloration inside the case at all.

I'm guessing that Speer is using Alliant powders since they are part of the same group.

I've NEVER in some 45+ years of shooting seen brass this clean.

I'm wondering if perhaps it was loaded with Sport Pistol? I can't find any in the DFW area to try out. I know it's supposed to be very clean burning.

Gibson’s in weatherford had some awhile back good price too I’d give them a call.

Oh, and I never start with cases that are sparkly clean inside, so have no idea if WST or Sport Pistol will do it, even though I have used both.

That would be a good test, and with multiple primers. I do have everything I need to wet tumble, I just haven't done it.

I'll have to give them a call, it's an 1.5 hour drive, one way.
Yeah it’s about 30 for me I think it’s about 24.00lb they have lots of powder. Lead Heads LLC in Saginaw gets powder delivered every other Thursday if you want something they will order it for you. If I remember correctly no hazmat.

I've been using sport pistol for over a year and on my second eight pound jug. I can only judge by the outside of the case because I don't wet clean but I can say I use use 4.2 grs with a 124 gr f/p 1.070 oal rmr bullet and the case comes out looking about like it did going in the gun.

I don't really care what the brass looks like after I shoot it, my wet tumbler cleans it all up unless it is really bad.
(and if it's that bad I wouldn't want to load it anyway)
But cleaner powders are nice, but in general I don't worry about how clean it is just how it shoots.

I try to make loads that don't scorch the outsides of the cases. I am not always 100% successful, but as long as it is minimal I can live with it. I also want loads that do not spew flakes of partially burned powder or powder debris. Shoot over a plastic picnic table and it will tell on dirty loads. Loads that do that are not acceptable.

I shoot Fiocchi Zeta Pi primers and they leave the cases with bright-brass inside using several popular powders, W231, BE-86, Longshot, H110, IMR4227. With the last two, I get some clear "powder skeletons," but not much. I never get any black residue at all. However, with the exact same loads using Federal, CCI, or Remington primers, the cases are black and filthy. I shoot the Zeta Pi to avoid lead styphnate residue, but doing away with the other filth which is not lead is nice too. I've fired more than a thousand in numerous guns and they've never failed. The only issue I'm aware of is they're alleged not to have a long shelf-life. They might not be the best choice to store for decades. At this point (early in my course), I store components rather than loaded cartridges.

The Zeta Pi primers have a brass rather than nickel color on the cup, but they're surely not the only ones. I believe Federal and Winchester also offer similar primers but only in factory-loaded cartridges.

Good point, I don't care for those either, I was thinking more along the lines of dirty brass which doesn't bother me, unburned powder all over the place is
