One of my favorite .22LR rifles

Prone at 50', but here's the target we shoot.

Outer most ring is a 3. So all in the black could be as low as 30/100.
10 bullseye target

what model was that daisy BB gun in the photo? I think I had the same model. mine had a 50 bb magazine the screwed in the barrel. the pump arm had an arm the came down when you cocked it mine was fairly powerful and much more powerful than the red rider type lever bb guns! I shot plenty of bbs also!!

great story!!

I loves me some good shooting. Well done, @Picher

I agree and even at 50 feet I doubt that 95% of the THRs could do that well. I'm fairly certain that I can't do it!

Not taking anything away from THR members, but I'm guessing few of the remaining 5% can even do this. By my calculations, that's a 2.4MOA group. It takes a darned good rifle shot to shoot under 5 MOA while standing. By way of comparison, the NRA SR-1 (100 yard High Power Slow Fire) target has a black 9- and 10-ring that're 6.4 and 3.4 MOA, respectively. Even master level HP shooters (wearing special shooting jackets) will put a couple in the 9 ring.

There is no substitutes for a lot of practice. I only wore out one 22 and 2 BB guns before I finished high school.

Your burn barrel game reminds me of the one that I used at our city dump (where we took the burn barrels to empty}. I liked to try to shoot the tops of aspirin bottles at ranges from 10 to 25 yards. My home town was so small that we had no organized leagues for anything outside of school. On the other hand, the ranch was only 15 minutes, or miles of you wish, out of town.

A year or so ago, my grandson shot in our local club's high youth team and they had a "Father-Son" match, which I agreed to participate because his dad couldn't do it. It was the first time in my life that I fired using a shooting coat...and four positions. At 73 years old, I was very uncomfortable when trying to fit into a shooting jacket and getting into four positions. Thought I'd be crippled for life, as my knees were killing me from kneeling and even found sitting and prone to be painful. By the time I shot offhand (last position), I couldn't hold steady at all. I felt like I was put on a rack for punishment!!!

It's a Daisy Pump BB gun. My first was my brother's hand-me-down Red Ryder that had to be oiled every few shots or the BBs wouldn't exit the barrel. The second was a pump like the one in the photo and I used it so much, it had to be sent back to the factory for repairs. The third one got shot out too, but by that time, I'd been shooting firearms and gave up on BBs.

I've actually done a little better with another rifle with a little better trigger and match ammo, but this is the best I could do with this one and Dynapoints.

I've had one box of Winchester Dynapoints (several hundred in the box as I remember) and they are very accurate but I never see them anywhere. Wish they were readily available. Win may have dropped them from their .22 line?

I am impressed with the rifle and your shooting. Good job. I can't shoot that well and I am a multiple turkey shoot winner myself.

I paid $459.95 (a spare magazine was included) for my Model 504 rifle several years ago. I never understood why this rifle never became more popular (though some did complain about accuracy issues). Mine, equipped with a Nikon "ProStaff" 4x scope, is very accurate. I'm over half way to eighty years of age now but, I have to confess, even when twenty years old, I doubt I could ever have shot a group as tight as Picher did shooting offhand. I stand in awe...:notworthy:

Using a sling while standing can add a bit of stability, but compared to the added stability when your elbow is planted, it’s a pretty small benefit. If it works for you, though, great.

In formal matches, using a sling while standing isn’t typically allowed - and shooters benefit from a stable target stance anyway.

Just did a gunbroker search for the 504 , one .22 asking $1200.00 and two in 17 fireball asking $2495.00 and $3695.00.....dang!

Try it, keep an open mind, learn...........you might be surprised at how well you can do.

Talked to some deer hunters at work.
Surprised the heck out of me when a couple told me they don't shoot past 50 yards, even with a rest.
New guy at work, killed elk and stuff. He said he's always gotta take a rest, hunted his whole life and sucks at offhand.
Me? I dunno, just do what I gotta do.
This yrs was 40 yards on the run.
Prev deer was 60 yards on a trot, and the one before that........75 yards thread the needle.
All offhand. Nothing spectacular IMHO. Just normal shooting.

Bet the OP is super picky about gun fit and that .22 rifle fits him great :)

The trick to offhand shooting is PRACTICE. At first youll probably struggle but rounds down range will get you there. Just went and shot 2 rounds of offhand air rifle this morning. 30 shots each round, 10 meters. Everything helps ...

I shot High Power Rifle for a season for a little R&R from hand gunning. For good reason, the vast majority of my dry- and live-fire practice was done standing. From the outset, it was clear standing would require the most work.

Shot this on the Club's indoor range at 50 feet with my 39A. Not the best shooting, but not bad for the rifle/ammo. I'd had so much trouble with that rifle, especially extraction/ejection, so after putting in and adjusting a new extractor, sold it at a gun show. This is the rifle that had the iron sights counter-clockwise off top dead center. I may have sold it too cheap ($300), but just wanted it out of my life.

(I buy postal stickers and attach them to stiff paper for 50 foot rifle targets. The work well and are pretty cheap.)
