Some of you have seen this revolver I picked up about a year ago. It's a S&W 500 mag, designed by 500mag aficionado, John Ross and built by the S&W performance center. Since S&W will build you any gun, but requires a minimum quantity of 500, there were exactly 500 produced. 250 in satin stainless and 250 in black oxide with a stainless cylinder. Mine is stainless and has a SN of 002X. I'd venture to say my box of 20 rounds was only second box its shot.
The gun has quite an interesting backstory, having been pawned not once, but twice.
It's a 5" barrel, with external muzzle nut and no compensator. The nut brings the cylinder gap to about .004", raising velocity about 100fps. It's a bear to shoot, but fun. I have no real need for it, as there aren't bears in KS anymore. With older, standard ear muffs the blast and concussion aren't all that bad. Shooting it the other day, we compared it with a 45acp. Both were shot into the side of an old home hvac unit. They both left 5/8" holes in the case, and the 45 penetrated 2 stainless burners. The 500 left a slightly bigger hole, but penetrated 5 stainless burners.
Here it is next to a Interarms 44mag Virginia dragoon.
Anyone have an idea of its value? New they were about $1400, and I've seen them selling for $2000+. I'm contemplating selling it to fund a 32-20 colt pistol to match my 1873 32-20 rifle.
