Longtime lurker.. First post since I’m not sure if I’ll ever get back to school with this weather!

I’m searching for a new deer rifle to use in sourthern Michigan - straight wall cartridges only.

I like pretty wood stocks on bolt actions. The deer I’ve shot the past few years have been between 50 and 150 yards, but I hunt a farm with the potential for 200+ ranges.

I’ve been toying with the idea of a .450 Bushmaster Ruger American and a Boyd’s laminate stock, but I’m just not excited about that. Also, AR’s are out. I have one but don’t enjoy hunting with it.

Another idea I had was somehow rebarreling a CZ 527 or 557 to a .450 Bushmaster or the new 350 Legend I’m reading about, but I’m not sure how that process would work.

Any ideas?

don't thin the 450 will fit in the 527 mag. what range are you thinking, are you opposed to a lever action. the 350 L is a little to new right now. welcome to THR.

Nothing against a lever-action, if I could find the right chambering. I looked at a .44 mag, but that seems like it drops off pretty fast. I’d like to be able to stretch to 200 yards if needed.

Thanks for the welcome!

45-70 is a no-go for southern Michigan, since the case is a little too long. I think you can trim the case and shoot reloads legally but that’s beyond me right now.

The Winchester XPR Sporter would be the only rifle currently available in 350 Legend that comes close to your requirements. I would wait to see which rifles are so chambered this coming year, as this cartridge seems like it was tailored to your needs.

If you're handy at all, build a Savage in 350 Legend. That's what I'd do.

here's my current Savage project - also an "eastern woods" deer rifle. Started life out as a 7.62x39 Model 10 scout rifle, then got a stock upgrade to a walnut model 11 Lightweight hunter stock, and is about to get a 20" 7mm-08 barrel put on it. With the 1.5-4x Leupold scope, it weighs exactly 7 lbs. and points like a dream.

I'll have $500 in the rifle and $139 (on sale) in the scope when I'm done.

That Ruger 77/44 would probably be my second choice. Great guns and super quick in the deer woods.

This is exactly what I’m looking for. $650 isn’t bad at all!

Thanks. Nice to see another option, I am sure others will follow. As for the nice wood stock, I am sure others will show up. Like it was mentioned by another member here in the said cartridge thread, a CZ 527 FS would be something along those lines. Surely CZ has spies reading THR!!!
dpms i selling uppers and barrels. i don't see cz making a 350L, there are some places that will rebarrel them.

I certainly HOPE cz is listening! Unfortunately the 450, or 50 Beowulf, won't fit in the cz527 single stack mag. A custom in 350 legend, or 357 max rimless could be built, but $$$$.
First off, do you reload? If so the world is open to you. A ruger American in 450bm is probably the easiest, and drop it in a boyds stock for the wood look, about $600 all told.

I used to live in MI so I ponder these points regularly.

In an ideaI world, I would skip the bolt action unless the cartridge you demand is only chambered in a bolt action. I would get an AR for the .450 Bushy. Me personally, if I was in MI again would buy a Bighorn Armory lever gun in .460 S&W. They are $2000 plus though. Alternatively I would get a single shot (Encore or H&R) in .460.

In my world, a single shot is not much different than a bolt action.

More realistically and affordable I would probably go with a .44 Mag lever gun. 200 yd range and cheap to shoot compared to .450, .460, or shotgun slugs.

Shotguns are still a viable option in MI if you can stand the recoil. It is an option I have not been able to get away from and still use a 12 ga Deerslayer is my primary hunting arm. A 20 ga Savage 220 would be nice and affordable for you.

I'm in the same thought process. I've pretty much settled on the TC Katahdin 460 (I would pair it with a 209x50 barrel for the M/L season).

The 450BM is no slouch though. I've seen what it does to deer, and worked as a range officer at my club during "sighting in days" time where we are open to the public. I swear I've yet to see one that is not accurate. Even the cheap Ruger American ones in 16" shoot well.

Randy's Hunting Center often makes special runs on these variations of 450BM.
This one is sweet! Item 797533322 on GB. I'm super tempted on this as well, but i like the pairing of the new M/L for me with the TC package.

Same boat here.
Don't want an AR.
The Ruger American has a crap stock.
Buddy put his in Magpul. I haven't messed with it to see if I like it or not.
The Ruger #1 in .450 looks horrible.
I suppose I could build a Savage, but then I'm into a clunky bolt rig and the American is already there LOL
Too bad they don't make a Rem 7600 in .450 BM

For classically styled bolt action I would get a short action savage and re barrel it to 45 Raptor or 450 bushmaster depending on if you hand load or not. The much easier but slightly less classy thing would be a ruger american in 450 bushmaster and then just put it in a boyds walnut stock.

However my choice would be to buy a Thompson Center Encore frame and walnut stock and then order a barrel in your cartridge of choice from Match Grade Machine. My personal choices would be a 445 super mag or a 460 S&W. The economy option of this would be to get a Henry single shot in 44 mag and have a gunsmith ream the chamber to 445 mag.

Personally, I'd go the lever action route and just get a .44 mag. You'll always be able to find bullets locally, and it'll do what you need inside of 200 yards. Sounds like you're young based on the school comment, which likely means limited funds so you probably don't want anything too exotic.

I'm under similar hunting restrictions in Ohio, but I hunt thick woods with 40 yards being about my max range and I went with a .357mag Marlin. I considered a .44mag but I wanted something that'd be fun to plink with as well, and .38's are a joy to shoot out of this gun.
