I will be fooling around with 223 soon and I have some xtreme 55 grain to play with. I am unlikely to want to pay up for match bullets. Is there a reasonably priced fmj that is good quality and available in bulk?

UNLESS you are needing 300+yard accuracy for competitions or hunting, IMHO a bulk 55gr FMJ boat tail is a bulk 55gr FMJ boat tail. Buy whichever make you can find cheapest on the interwebs and it will well serve all your plinking needs. IMHO

I will be dealing with a 1 in 9 twist rifle that is supposed to be a tack driver at 200 yards. My range only gets to 100 yards, so I suspect I can get small groups at that range with less than match bullets. Also planning to cast and powder coat for somewhat reduced velocities.

Wolf are $60/1k at several online retailers.

Otherwise the Hornady softpoints are inexpensive and a great general purpose bullet. Better accuracy than FMJ and still inexpensive. https://www.hornady.com/bullets/rifle/22-cal-224-55-gr-sp-with-cannelure-6000#!/ Last I bought was a big bulk bag from Graf's & weren't any/much more than any general name brand FMJ. Midsouth Varmint Nightmare seems to be same thing and they have good price too.

RandyP is correct though - a bulk FMJ is a bulk FMJ. So unless there is something out there just plain old poorly constructed junk, for general training ammo they're gonna do the same.

And I view all claims of people saying their ARs are shooting 1MOA or better with XM193, Q3131, Fed AE, PPU, etc with extreme skepticism. Maybe I just suck....but I have to load up a VMAX or better to do it and I doubt half my ARs would do it on that even. If you want to hit a Coke can @ 100 yds, the Wolf bullets are fine. Or whatever else you choose.

I use the heck out of the RMR ones, all I run. Although Jake said that he just switched suppliers and he likes the newer ones better. I have yet to try them but was happy with the older models he had. Used em for paper punching. Cant go wrong for the price either!

Agree on the Hornady 55SP bullets being more accurate than the 55 fmj bt. I think the last time I bought some, it was a bulk bag and cost about a penny more each.

If you are shooting steel plates, then regular 55fmj are fine. If you are going for small groups on paper, then you might want to consider the 55SP.

If you really want fmjs, Hornady is the best accuracy.
If you want the most accurate cheap stuff, try something like Winchester white box soft points or hollowpoints.
Even the crappy monarch 55 sp is better than an FMJ.
If you just want to do Mag dumps, or under 100 yards standing, ammo doesn't matter.

I don't have an AR, but I have a mini-14 and a few .223 bolt rifles, all 1/9 twist. That's really all I want because I'm not a match shooter and loading long bullets. My bolt rifles prefer 62 gr bullets. My mini likes 55 grn. Might have something to do with the 5.56 x 45 chamber, don't know.

Most AR's aren't built to be 1 moa rifles. I think occasionally almost by accident one will shoot 1 moa out of the box. I know a Marine that bought a DPMS and I watched him shoot 1 moa OTB. He had a hard time believing it. You would have thought someone just gave him a $100.:D

I'm buying some of those SP boat tails.

Bob's Bulk Bullets 223bulkbullets.com.

They're similar to Hornady 55gr FMJBT. Personally, I like them better than Hornady. At least for me I've put out better groups with the Bob's bullets.

$83/k shipped. I think I sometimes saw them running specials at $79/k shipped.
Decent enough for my Ruger American Ranch and AR at 100 yards. Sorting and using the same headstamp brass does help

Not great but not bad for a 16 cent load out of $300 guns with $30 scopes.

I still can't get the groups as good as I could with $6/20 PMC Bronze which my 20" AR loves, but I can't find this ammo locally at this price anymore.

Hornady 55gr FMJ. I've used a bunch of the 55gr FMJ from RMR as well. As long as I've stayed away from bulk Winchester 55gr FMJ they've generally been comparable.

H335 and any decent 52/53/55 grain bullet should get you in the ballpark of good groups. W748 is good too, though I haven't used it in a while.

I ordered some of the hornady 62 grain soft points.

I have Varget, H4896, 4198 and 4064 on hand. Any of these candidates for an accurate load, or should I buy a pound of something else? At least for starters, I would like the most accurate load I can get. When I cast and powdercooat some 60 grainers, I will work on a less energetic plinking load.

Those random flyers from an otherwise tight group like the PMC bronze burn me up.
I like your 748 group in the AR more because they are consistent.
The one flyer can equal an unexplained miss or wounded animal. With the other, you know how far away you can hit something.

You have several good powders. I have good loads with 4895 and 4064. 4064 is tedious and slow. But it's accurate.
