I've got a new steel target set up and a place in the desert where I've marked distances in 100 yard increments, out to 500 yards (plus or minus a yard or two).

What would be your bullet choice for a .270 Win with a 1 in 10 twist, (is there any other twist in .270?)
to ring that steel at 500 yds?

Since you're apparently not after a normal answer. . . I've been playing with a bucketful of 6.8SPC specific light Nosler BTHPs from RMR. They're light, fast, and make a .270 feel like a .223.

AR500 plate I hope. If not, you'll probably be punching through more than ringing.

coated lead bullets or hollow point hunting rounds would be my first thought. something that will easily mushroom and spread out the impact area as to not damage the plate.

It is AR500 12" diameter steel.
Maybe I should clarify a little more. I've shot and reloaded .270 for 30 years now, but only for hunting. I've pretty much stopped hunting and I really miss shooting my .270, so that's why I got the steel target. I've also got a ton of hunting bullets on hand but I thought maybe some here would suggest a better bullet for long range target shooting. BTW for me 500 yards is VERY long range!

I'm not much of an expert on this subject, but I suspect anything that isn't steel core would be fine. I shoot at a range that has a 1000 yard lane, with steel targets setup at 300 - 1000 yards, and the only thing they don't want is anything steel-core, or 338 Lapua and 50 bmg.

I would use your hunting bullets they will be fine. I'm guessing you had a good all around hunting load and wasn't loading for max velocity. Heck I'd probably use 3/8 plates at ranges over 100 for a better ring. I'd try a 1/4 plate at 500. Shooting steel is addictive and way more fun than paper.

Agree but who has any steel core ammo for a 270 hunting rifle. I have a few for the 7.62 but have never seen for anything else

The steel target makes more difference that what you hit it with IMO.

This is the last one I hung up and the loudest so far.

That’s at 100 but even a guy with a 30 dB hearing loss, double plugged with electronic muffs and plugs can hear it at 300 yds clear as a bell.

I liked the 140 NBT when I shot a 270. It was easier to shoot tiny groups in the wind than 130s were.
I never tried the 130 vld that was suggested. It may be better.

The 130 Hornady SST and the 130 Speer BTSP both have good BCs and are inexpensive. I would start there, and pursue some of the heavier streamlined options like the Hornady ELD or Berger if you feel the need, and look into a 6.5CM or 7mm-08 before you shoot out the barrel in your .270.

Try the Hornady 145gr ELD-X, and 150gr SST. They have the highest b.c.
My guns however shoot Sierra 140’s and 150’s GameKings better.

MidwayUSA has some 145gr blems on sale foe $19.95/100.
