yeah, I literally just paid 500 for the cds version. at that price im tempted to buy another just to have

Honestly, I still haven't found a scope that is significantly better than the 3-9x40 FF2 optically. I sat there with my more expensive scope yesterday and played with them all for a while.
The Conquest hd5 and Ares btr, were noticeably better than the others, but honestly when set at 9-10 none would have given me an advantage on anything I could see from my house.

The vx3i is lighter than the rest, but it's only an oz less than the burris or Nikon buckmasters I was playing with. It's optical quality was as good or better, but not enough for it to matter to me. All told I for 300 I'd buy the leupold, but I don't think I'd spend the 400-499 on it over a FF2.
I'll say this also, what ever changes leupolds made to their newer scope has really improved the way I see colors thru them.

Burris - was started by Leupold engineers.

They are nice scopes.

I was on the TRACT optics site yesterday......they may have some clearance items for under $400....free shipping may be offered....worth a look.

I am looking for my first scope as well. I looked at that Vortex. It seems one can get the Dead Hold reticle or the V-plex reticle. I am not sure what the differences are. Right now, I am looking to put rounds on paper as accurately as possible from 100-500 yards, with taking deer at similar distances possible in the future (300 yards is likely max). Which reticle would be better? Also, is a medium height scope ring the place to start? Forgive my ignorance and instruct me, please.

Well...

My experience w/ that scope is it came mounted on a coupla Mossberg Patriot rifles with the BDC reticle.

Like it, but don't have any experience w/ the other reticle.

Medium rings would be a good guess, but I'd measure for'em.

Thanks for the reply. What is your opinion of the scope? Is it a decent beginner scope, or a pass?

Like'em quite a bit.

There is some grumble RE: quality, but have had no trouble w/ mine.
(and if you do have a problem w/ it? Vortex will make it right.)

Always suggest going to the LGS and lookin' through'em yourself.

Probably the best value scope out there.

Leupold freedom was $169 on prime for 3-9x40 last time I checked. Can't beat that price.

I bought this Leupold VX1 3-9 X 40 from an ebay seller, Sportsman's Outfitters about the time they were being discontinued for IIRC $135. Its a decent scope but perfect for the 1 week a year I actually use it. The rifle is a Ruger 77 Hawkeye in .280 Rem. Check out Sportsman's Outfitters on fleabay.
