On a lark, I purchased a Black Aces Pro Series S Mini as I've always wanted a short-barreled shotgun but disliked the additional hoops to jump through to own one.
Being the Pro Series Mini is considered a "firearm" rather than a "shotgun", I decided to give this particular one a shot.

My question now is what would be the most appropriate buckshot for home defense from such a barrel length.

I have quite a bit of 00 buck and #4 buck (and rifled slugs), but no 000 buck... yet.

With such a short barrel, I imagine buckshot would be leaving the muzzle at a much lower velocity. Keeping this in mind, I figured the mass of each individual buckshot might be somewhat more important to achieve adequate penetration.

I may be overthinking this, but does anyone have any experience with buckshot from shorter barrels?

No experience, but seems to me your thinking makes good sense. I also think that with a heavy load 1 1/4 oz, for example, you may get nearly full combustion in 10” and velocity will be faster than you might expect.

Not other than patterning it. Have you done that?

I literally purchased it off GB a couple hours ago. It will probably be a week before I actually receive it. A long week at that.

Basically, in a lot more words than what you said, I'll say the same thing..

This may seem as a non answer. IMO, buy some 5 packs of buckshot or whatever you plan on using. Get some 30"x 30" cardboard and shoot it whatever distance you plan on using it.
I won't insult pistols, shotguns or rifles by saying they are picky eaters; however, I've learned often some are kinda picky to very picky.

Like others have said, patterning helps. But federal flight control is designed to give tighter patters. So I don’t see why this may not end up as the chosen ammo anyway

In my Shockwave I run reduced recoil Federal #1 with the flight control wad and Aguila mini shells both slugs and buckshot.

Even though these are not hi power rounds, they still hit my steel silhouettes pretty hard.

I've tried standard buck shot rounds and it is pretty sporting to say the least.

BTW, that shotgun is sweet OP!!

Thanks for the info, folks. I have received the Remington 3" magnum 000 buck (Black Aces Tactical recommends hot loads for reliable function) but haven't had a chance to function test or pattern yet.

Thanks, I think so too. I picked mine up yesterday and the first thing my FFL transfer guy said when he placed it on the counter is "I bet they'll ban these". It really is surprisingly short. I look forward in seeing how reliable it is.

If anyone wants a size comparison to a Mossberg 590, I can take a family photo of them.

The velocity loss will be less than you imagine.
Due to fast burn rate of shotgun powders, and low volume to bore, most of the powder is consumed before the wad exits the hull. Velocity gain is simply a function of time under the pressure curve, with greatly diminishing returns, due to low gas volume.

The 10” velocity will be 85-90% of the 18.5” velocity.
Pattern thrown will be a function of choke, or lack of.

choose shot size based on intended use. Based on my experience in 25yrs in L.E., I suggest #1 buck. Good compromise between penetration and pattern density.
90%+ of my shotgun use since retiring 15yrs ago, has involved using #1B reloaded in a 20ga. 10pellet load has killed deer and pigs effectively at ranges up to 40yds. However, I get 95-100% patterns on 9” paper plate at 25yds.

I suspect that your gun will have a cylinder choke, so patterns at expected usage will be about 1” per yard. Or, 10” at 30’.
It’s a SHORT RANGE self defense weapon, despite FX in movies...

3” (and 3.5”) magnum buckshot packs plenty of whollop... on both ends of the shotgun! I’ll personally pass on it for SD use, but if you’re ok with the bump and roar it’ll certainly end a fight quickly with good hits.

Stay safe.

I didn’t even think about the ammo dependent functioning with an auto loader.

What brand is this based off? Mossberg, Remington?

Can any adjustments be made to the gas system?

I'm going to guess something along the lines of a Mossberg 930, but I could very well be wrong.

It comes with a standard gas piston/ring installed that will function with all but the most energetic of magnum shells (though I read the preinstalled gas piston will function with those too).
It also comes with a "magnum" gas piston.

Due to work, I haven't had the opportunity to function fire this yet. It does appear to be well made. I'm not seeing any corners that appeared to have been cut.
