Hi all, just got my hands on an almost brand new, barely used S&W 59-9mm.
It’s in an immaculate condition, even the original box. All manuals, cleaning tools etc.
I was wondering if someone could help me trace year of manufacture,
Thanks

Go to S&W forum. Look up serial #.
M59 was made for about 10yrs in late ‘70’s to early ‘80’s.
Superseded by 659, and then, 5906.
These replaced by “plastic phantastic.”
I’m rather fond of the S&W autos.
5906, 5906PC, PPC9-5”, PPC9-6”, Super-9 w/3 barrels (9para, 9x21,.356TSW).

Added: welcome to the asylum!

i just sold mine 459 i had for 30 years never jammed on me  not as accurate as the canik feg or tz 75 at a 100 yards but ok, just upgrade to another S&W M&P to a 40 cal compact 12 rounds in mag one in the chamber

Would be grateful if you are able to let me know if it’s a first or second generation,
Regards and thanks

It's a first generation. Second generation would be a model 459. Only difference is the addition of a firing pin block safety.
What do you think Lucky Derby, I went through some reviews, well some of the reviews criticized this model, what’s your opinion, am a big fan of S&W’s got a 357 and a 39-2( love this piece)

They are good pistols. Basically a double stack version of the model 39. They were the first "Wonder Nine". Double Stack/Double Action. Earlier guns had one or the other but the 59 was the first to combine the two. You have a good example of a significant model.

negatives is the 459/59 triggers are gritty on them hard to tune them up,
working on my new S&w m& p 40 cal 2.0 i got a lot of the creep out and seems to be crisper

time 11.45 the saftey plunger is the key to smoothing the M&p trigger out the rear side was a little tough to remove:uhoh:

I had a 639 for a few years. It was in excellent condition and a great shooter. I regret selling it.
