Local pawn shop has a very good to excellent S&W 629-6 2.5 bbl I can get for $690
Or
S&W 19 Nickel plated. Didn’t see what dash but the fireing pin was on the hammer .Action is in great shape but a scarred finish looks like it was pocket or bouncing around in a car console most of its life again 2.5 bbl I can get for $480 maybe a little less
Or
A 3 screw Blackhawk with conversion in .41 mag. 4 5/8 bbl. action is excellent but blueing is very worn on bbl. $325.
Which would you pursue ?

Shorter barrel than I like on a .44 so would pass on the 629 I think. S&W seems high if I understand the condition right. Bummer that the 41 has the conversion done but think I would go that was if you reload, plus more barrel to work with there.

If you don't reload I think I would do the S&W if they came down some.

I think you’ll see a lot more flare than performance in a 44 mag that short. Will make impressive fireballs though, but that can get old fast when you’re seeking a gun that works as a tool.

I would go for the 19 as the gun, but for cartridges I have a soft spot for the .41.

The question boils down to use, and do you want a big bore?

No I don’t reload. I’m not really a “collector” but I like adding revolvers when I can. The only reason I like the Blackhawk is that it’s a 3 screw. Had it not been converted I would have got it on the spot. The 629 is in in excellent shape. Is $690 a good price? And is there anyway to tell if the 19 is a factory nickel? Iv allways thought the S&W 29 and 19 were the best looking SWs.

I think I'd go for the Blackhawk because
A) I have been thinking A lot about a 41 mag lately, and
B) I have been on quite the single action kick lately.
C) I really like the 4 5/8 bbl on a SA.

What was the conversion that was done?

Love my 4" 629..... and 7.5" SBH. Guess a gotta find a 19 to give my final answer.. lol.

I wouldn't buy any of those guns they all sounds like a mess
No one in their right mind should buy a 2.5 inch barrel 44 magnum first of all.
Model 19 have been run rough could have serious internal mechanical issues
And only even consider the Ruger if you want to deal with 41 caliber at least that one is cheap so maybe but I wouldn't waste my time with any of them
From me the minimum barrel for 44 Magnum to make it useful or practically shootable is 5 in.

If I had to walk out the door with one, it'd be the Blackhawk.

A 2.5" barrel on a 44 mag is insane. The 2.5" barrel on the Model 19 is a little less insane, but still shorter than I'd want for running 357s. As a 38 spl only revolver... maybe? But $480 is a lot to pay for a beat-up 38 Spl revolver when there are so many cheap Model 10s/64s and J frames still running around.

The Blackhawk is cheap and 41 mag in a 4 1/2" single action sounds good to me. I wouldn't be as worried about ammo costs as some are - single actions are pretty easy on ammo. At that price, it'd make a fun plinker or reblue project.

Since the Blackhawk and 19 add up to almost the price of the 629, why not offer 700 for both? All the seller can say is no...but I’ll guess he will counter with something close.

I have a 629 mountain gun and it’s a handful with full power loads for sure. I must say that as neat as the short barrelled big bores look, with magnums a 2.5” barrelled one would really be a beast to hang on to. :what:

Stay safe.

When the conversion on the BH was completed all of the original parts were returned to the owner with the gun. If those parts are still with the gun I would buy it.

I had the conversion done to a .44 and the trigger pull went from a clean, crisp 2 lbs. to over 6 lbs. I sent it back to Ruger and if they made it better I couldn't feel it. I put the old parts back in and had my 2 lb. pull back...

It’s a myth that transfer bar revolvers have terrible trigger pulls. Let’s face the facts, more often than not, box-stock Rugers need their actions slicked up. That said, with the right person doing the trigger job, the transfer bar gun isn’t giving anything up. It just has to be done right.

The 19 has possibilities. Mahovkey's Metalife replated my cylinder, and it looks like new. The others are misfits. Large bore snubbies are not for everyone. Big Blackhawks balance better with a barrel at 5.5 or longer and are much easier to shoot with Bisley grips.

JMHO that is worth what you paid for it; I would pass on all three.

Got no use for a single action revolver. I have a Blackhawk Convertable in 357/38/9mm and it never gets used.

If I am buying a double action revolver with a 3-inch, maybe even 4-inch, barrel or shorter it better be fixed sights. Not to mention a snub-nose 44 Mag seams like way too much bark for the bite.

How come, if you don’t mind me asking?

For a CCW I want double action only (fixed sights too). For woods carry double action also is desired.
For competition I really enjoy USPSA/IDPA with a revolver and SASS has very little draw to me (almost no reloads on the clock) so I need double action and moonclips or speed-loaders.
For hunting I could use a single action but I have been doing the double action thing so much and for so long I shoot them better. The last two deer I killed were both shot double action.
The gate loading and unloading of a single action revolver sort of drives me nuts after years of using moonclips and speed-loaders. My first revolver was my Blackhawk Convertible. My second revolver was a S&W 610 and it's been double action and moonclips/speed-loaders ever since. Nothing wrong with a single action in general but it does not do what I need/want a revolver to do.
