Hello everyone. I am new to the forums. Glad to meet you all.

I am in search of the most appropriate bolt action platform, to be re-chambered into Remington Jet. Looking specifically for bolt action, I know many would say there are lots of lever actions appropriate, but I want it bolt please, for ease of being prone. From what I can find Ruger M77 would be the easiest option and are common, but I guess something like Remington 700 series could do it as well (788)

Before I get the usual argument over, ''why?'' I understand it would cost alot, for not a whole lot in return, but I have a very legitimate and simple counter-argument. I have cartridges already, for my model 17 revolver in Jet too, so it makes sense.

Since the 22 rem jet is based off of a 357 magnum, the easiest place to start would be a ruger M77 since the bolt face is already correct. I expect it would take a good deal of fiddling to get the magazine to feed properly.

The next two logical places to start to me would be something chambered in 22 hornet such as the savage model 40. That would require the barrel to be set back and re-chambered, the bolt face opened, and the magazine fiddled with. I know winchester made a bolt action in 218 bee. That would also be pretty close. Anything in chambered in 223 or 221 fireball would not be that difficult to convert but again, I suspect a functional magazine to be a big hurdle.

Hmmm, you are right, I guess .22 hornet and .218 Bee are good starting choices as well, and anything for .256 win mag. I know Sako makes bolt action examples for those two.

Have you also considered the .221 Fireball? It has the advantage of using cut-down rimless 223/556 NATO brass and provides far superior ballistics in a cartridge roughly the same size as the 22 Jet. You'd have an excuse to get yourself a XP-100 and thus still have a handgun of sorts in the same chambering.

I have a Marlin 62 Levermatic in .256 and would not trade it for the world, so I get where you are coming from. I think Dave's link above is a great starting point. Welcome to THR and please keep us updated with your progress.

Yes, both (win mag) rounds use a .357mag parent case, so a Ruger M77 would be the clearest choice.

.221 Fireball is neat, I agree - but other than an experiment of mine, it makes sense and I am not trying to do it because I can..... but rather since I also have a S&W Mod 17 revolver in .22 Jet with cartridges too.

I am not sure of the energy changes .22 Jet would get punching itself out of a 22in barrel. Pretty sure it would at the least measure up to the Bee.

The 22 Rem jet case looks like the old glass milk bottles IIRC and might not feed well thru the M77 magazine. The 256 might be the better option as the cases have more straight wall construction. The 22 Rem mag was a great idea for the S&W model 53 in theory but the bottle necked case caused problems unless the chambers were kept very,,very clean cases would st back and seize up the cylinder.

What would be a good barrel twist to plan for such a conversion? Assuming 30-50gr bullets, I figure with the similarity to .218 Bee 1:14 or 1:16. Seem appropriate?
Anyone have experience with Dakota varminter scopes?
