I am curious has anyone ever worked up a smokeless load for .44-40 (.44 WCF) to be used in a 2" revolver? What sort of velocity/energy can be achieved? I was not able to find any information anywhere on the internet of this being done. Traditionally .44-40 is fired from a 5.5"-24" barrel, rather slowly as compared to more modern cartridges. Is it possible to work up a formidable self defense round using more modern powders, with low report, low flash, and decent velocity? I don't think I have ever seen a short barrel handgun chambered for this round, when .38spl/.357 mag, .44 spl/mag rule the roost in this age. What would you guys recommend? Is there a factory load sold anywhere that meets or at least partially meets this criteria?
