Every once in a while this question pops up in my head so I’ll throw it out. Mossberg in my mind is first and foremost a shotgun company so I wonder why they import a 20 gauge semi-auto instead of making it themselves.

Companies make decisions based on markets and profitability. So my guess is they don’t see enough market for 20 Ga to engineer one themselves. Or they’re testing the market to see if they should. Or they determined there wasn’t enough profit margin on a US made one.

Personally, I try and buy American made products made by American owned companies. But I also am a business owner and understand why things like this are done. So I guess I have mixed feelings. On one side, I hope they come out with one made in the USA. But I hate seeing these made overseas.

Your explanation makes sense but if true then it seems to me there is some fundamental difference that sets Mossberg apart from the other big guys on the block because Beretta and it’s subsidiaries, along with FN and the two shotgun brands under their umbrella make semi 20 gauges.

I think of them as 1st and foremost a pump shotgun company.

This is just a guess....they came out with their pump 1st and then expanded into the semi auto market by importing similarly to some of their competitors in the same price / product market segment.

Not just 20 ga, but 28 and .410 also. It was probably less expensive to do it this way than tool up and make their own, particularly when 28 and .410 autos are hard to make well at a decent price point.
