Do any of you have first hand experience with CorBon performance ? An acquaintance of mine had to put down a pitbull, one shot to the back of the head with a .44 mag, 300 whatever grain CorBon, says it pretty well drove the dog into the ground, but the exit wound was .44-sized. The entrance was pretty messy- contact distance- gas expansion damage, He's thinking that if it won't expand in this kind of situation maybe he needs to be carrying regular old hollowpoints. Comments?

Corbon has three .44 mag loads in the 300+ grain weight. Two of the three are intended to be used on large, dangerous animals (i.e., bears) where penetration is the most important factor. These are specifically designed to not expand. Even the third choice (300 gr. JSP) would likely plow right through a relatively small animal like a pitbull without opening up unless it hit a large, thick, heavy bone, which pitbulls don't really have. None of the three loads are hollow points.

Yup, regular old hollowpoints would be better for nasty dogs.

even if they were hollowpoints, the general consensus is that when you choose bullets on the heavier end of the spectrum for the given caliber, you get deeper penetration often to the detriment of expansion. Likewise, if you choose light-for-caliber bullets you (generally) get violent expansion while losing penetration.

although he could have made a much better choice of bullet for the job, it got the work done nonetheless...

i'm not sure what the definition of "regular old hollowpoints" is, but i think Corbon would qualify. they are just Nossler HP's loaded pretty hot, and usually lighter than "standard" weight fo their respective calibers. if he had to shoot the dog through the head, theres a good chance that impact with the skull deformed the bullet sufficiently as to cause it not to expand as designed. CorBons are not "wierd" rounds. they're just lighter and faster than some other types. some folks like light and fast (like me) and some folks like heavy and slow. either one will get the job done if you hold up your end. sounds to me like the round did its job. i think your friend has been watching too many movies with a small entance wound and a gaping, bowling ball sized exit wound. real world stuff doesn't always work like the movies.

p.s. poor doggie.

THE CORBON COMPANY DOESA NOT! USE NOSLER BULLETS.

The 300 gr 44 bullet under discussion was designed for deep penetration in big game animals. Dogs are NOT big game animals.
It did kill the hell out of that dog though, I don't know waht else he could hope for?

Thanks, guys. I'll pass this on. I think he was concerned that the bullet acted like a big SWC when he expected that it would have expanded. The .44 is his daily carry, the pitbull thing just came his way. I also told him what many of you said- "hey, it sure worked, right?".

If you select a 1300 FPS 300 grain soft/hollow point intended to penetrate 2 feet into a hog or bear, and fire it into the 4"-6" thick head of a dog, it is not going to be expanding all that much, if at all. It is going to exit the head in roughly the same configuration it entered, with a whizz-pot full of retained energy.

It will, however, still be a 300 grain slug at ~1300 FPS impacting the head, which is still one heck of a thump. Properly placed, it will do the job rather nicely, as demonstrated in Motorep's story.

Shot placement is darn near _everything_ in a "stop" shot. Think of any expansion of your bullet as icing on the cake. Select your ammunition with strong consideration of how it will work if it does not expand at all, as many hollow points can "fail" when fired through common materials like thick clothing, or if they miss denser parts of anatomy.

yikes! sorry. didn't mean to give wrong info. i was under the impression that CorBon's self defense rounds use Nosslers. not true? what bullets do they use? i didn't think they had their own propriatary flavor. sorry about that.
