Hi guys. I need an education about rails. I never used them. I would like to try a red dot on my Remington V3 shotgun. Can I buy any picattiny or weaver rail, or will they all be different because the receiver mounting holes are not standard from gun to gun? I tried searching for answers but I got nothin'.

Thanks

Pete

If your V3 is already drilled and tapped, get the rail for that model. The holes on the firearm should line up with the rail. If your V3 isn't D&T, you can get whatever rail you want and put the holes in the receiver where the rail sits. I am putting a rail for a 10/22 on a Mav 88 the same way.

I purchased the one specific for the gun.

Just had a hard time wrapping my head around how the tapped holes are not the same for all rifles and shot guns, or at least limited to a few different configurations. I'm stubborn like that :)

I had the same thought. Grab a couple of your rifles that are D&T for mounts and measure. Action lengths are much different. A 10/22 has holes drilled much closer together than a shotgun. Manufacturers also want to drill in areas where the metal is stronger and not have scopes mounted to relatively thin metal walls. So they will move holes around to where there is thicker metal. I am also stubborn. Which is why I am D&T my shotgun for a rim fire rail instead of buying a new one or another shotgun.
