Weaver and Picatinny Rail Question

If I want to install a mesa tactical picatinny rail on my mossberg 500, will I be able to mount most red dot sights? For example, if the red dot sight says that it fits standard weaver mounts, does this mean it will also fit a picatinny rail as well? I recall that in general: Weaver fits Picatinny, but Picatinny doesn't fit Weaver.

Weaver and Picatinny rails are the same dimensions except for the size and spacing of the slots, IIRC. If the mount for the red dot has only 1 thing that goes into a slot, it will fit either. If it uses scope rings, it'll work with either. But if there's more than 1 slot thing, it will only work with one or the other.
