How does your hunt club, gun club, private members only range keep people out?

I received an email today stating our hunt club/private members only range was burglarized. I guess they damaged two doors, broke into the out buildings that house lawn equipment and other things. The rear door is locked from the inside with a 4x4 across the door and into steel brackets and the front door is steel with a 2'' steel pipe through a bracket and across the door.

My main concern is the equipment garage man door is a standard door. The front gate is literally a double metal pipe gate that locks in the center and the fencing around the property is about 4ft chain link. I have had people either crawl under the tube vehicle gate or climb the 4ft chain link to come talk to me when I was shooting or fishing. In my opinion the 4ft chain link needs to be at least 6ft and the vehicle gate needs to be an actual gate instead of tube steel someone made in their garage. The back of the property is surrounded by farmland and no fencing around it.

I bring these concerns up because when we have monthly meetings again I can voice my concern and the membership or at least the 20 out of 150 members who show to the meeting can say yay or nay.

a couple years ago my local private range installed an electric gate activated by your card. There are cameras at the gate as well.

We are a 150 member club with dues of $65yr with work hours or $250yr with no work. I doubt they can afford to have a key card gate. I agree 100% the gate should be key card and not a combo lock changed every 6 months. I had a very young girl 16/17yo (she could drive) unlock the gate one night and tell me her dad was a member and he was on his way. I advised her that she could fish while I was there but when I left she had to leave. She says he dad is a member and gave her the code. 3hrs later no dad. I told her she had to leave and she called dad. Dad was mad when the lands committee member asked to see his club ID. What's jacked up is the clubhouse, gate, wagons, and anything else with a lock is all the same for that 6 months. Everything should be key card. Thanks for the good idea.

Usual minimum requirement for security fencing is 7', with the posts being 8' with some kind of anti-scaling feature. Either barbwire, razor wire, of if using chain link having the diamonds smaller than 2". If you meet that a lot of times it's an insurance break. As far as the gate goes, make it out of the same stuff and the same way as the fence.

If you check out the modern anti-climbing fencing, a lot of it looks very good and not "aggressive" but is very resistant to compromise without tools.

My club, went to key card for all club house doors and a fiberglass automatic swing down pole that suffices as a vehicle gate. No fences around the 50 or so acres Wet lands on three sides though.
250 dues paying members and numerous, life or honorary members.
Club weapons, junior rifle team 22’s and numerous M1 Garlands used for Civilian Marksman ship shoots are in enormous safes in the basement range.
The covered out door range has a warming room at one end, same key card. Out buildings for grounds Maintence equipment is key locked with only the grounds chairman or president have keys for.
Key cards pretty much do away with members allowing guest access with them selves being present

In my 38 years I’ve never heard of any break ins of the club house, but then I’m away for 5 months of the year for the past 15.
In all honesty it’s the members them selves that cause most of the security problems.
Last year was the clubs 100th birthday.

We run about 700-to-800 members, electronic gate opens with a programmable key fob....don't pay your dues the key fob doesn't get updated. Surveillance cameras throughout the park (about 80 acres). Anything bad happens its on camera as well as vehicle license plates. We also have a park resident that has a mobile home, keeps and eye on comings and goings.

I had to chuckle when you said they climb the fence or crawl under the gate... guess people just don’t respect a locked gate or fence anymore...

My former private club had the same sort of gate but it was way away from the range making driving the only real option, but the terrain did compliment this design

The clubhouse is about 3/4 mile off pavement with a gate about 1/2 way. Members know the code to get in. Cameras at the gate to record everyone coming and going and set to record tag numbers. In addition to cameras in multiple locations on the property. There are about a dozen campers set up all the time and there are members camping there quite often. I'd say over 1/2 of the time someone is there at night.

In addition to shooting we have a small lake for fishing. They also lease about 1000 acres adjoining the club that is hunted by a few of our members. Those areas are open 24/7. Shooting is sunup till sundown Tuesday-Sunday. Mondays are for range cleanup, mowing and maintenance.

Our local club has a fence and locked gate that stops people from driving in to shoot but it is easy to get onto the property from the south and east where there is nothing but livestock fencing. There is a live in caretaker.
A few years ago the caretaker was gone for a week during the winter and came home to find some crackhead had broken into the clubhouse and was living in it. As far as I know that is the only time something like that has happened since the club was started back in the mid-sixties.
