Ruger American

I bought a RA just before deer season in 243 since I had sold my other 243 and had so much ammo left. I paid $275 or so on a GB auction plus the shipping and transfer. Mine has the newest style stock with the stiffer forend. Its worlds better stock wise the the crap stock that came on the one Savage I made the mistake of buying.

So far my best groups are in the 1.5" range but thats with loads worked up for my other 243. So far I'm happy with the gun. I next would like to get the 7.62x39 rifle.

Others have listed the cost cutting. The matt finish, plastic stock and cost cutting machine work all make it possible to sell a gun at a discount. Its not an heirloom rifle but perfectly suitable for field and hunting use.

When did they start with this upgrade?

I think I've had mine for about 5 years.

I am a Ruger person. Own several including a M77 in .257 Roberts I bought in high school at a Gibsons discount store brand new for $110 in 1972, still a tack driver. All my pistols are Rugers. I recently needed a cheapo rifle for my better half to shoot hogs during deer season. I got her a Ruger Predator in .22 250 with Redfield scope package. It is a tack driver. The American models get nothing but great reviews from friends. Redfield scopes are pretty good, made by Leupold at the Leupold facility.

Out of the 3 I own. I wouldn't sell any of em.

The 22 is a good for 3 inches at 100 with quality ammo. (I need to work on this at some point)

The 243 is a 1.5/2 incher depending on me and the day and load. It shoots well with slapped together ancient (70's primers and bullets from a yardsale) component loads. It's just that danged stock I hate.

The 7.62x39 is so much fun suppressed. It makes 350yd 10 inch steel plates a breeze to hit.
(Lots of random fliers from also aged 60's & 70's chicom and Soviet ammunition).

If I didn't have a savage BA10 stealth I'd be all over one in 6.5 creedmoor.

I recommend them wholeheartedly.

I want to thank everyone who has responded. Any and all worries/concerns I might have had are gone.
I have a few $2000+ flintlocks with beautiful wood. Plastic will be an interesting novelty.
Guess I better start about studying powders and bullets for 6.5 Creedmore. With the occasional break to research scopes.

I have an American .22 WMR. I put on a 3x9x32 Simmons scope and that thing is a fantastic shooter for me!

Stay safe.
