For some reason I've been stuck thinking on this recently what's your thoughts on truck guns I live in Oklahoma so the laws are relaxed I would like something manly for pig or coyote thought on deer I have permission to hunt on a lot of properties I check wells on and there's always the possibility of self defense I leaning towards a cheeper rifle in case it's stolen maby surplus I think mosins are still cheep but non adjustable sights make shooting a pig at 100 yards hard thanks

Sort of depends on what region of the country you live in as to what is cheap, yet effective. However the three that jump out at me are ...

1) PSA AR
2) Chinese or Yugoslav SKS
3) Marlin or Winchester 30-30.

I’ve put together premium PSA AR’s together with an FN barrel for a little over $400.

SKS’s are still around $350 to $450.

I see used Marlin and Win 30-30 lever action for $350 to $500. The $350 specimens are a bit rough on the outside and are typically in the ‘much loved’ category, but they typically haven’t been shot much. Just banged around in pick ups. That’s basically what you’ll be doing with it.

I’ve shot hog with all three calibers, deer with two and coyotes with two. Worked out fine.

What about the 1892 clones??? Nice and compact for the truck.... and shoot some warm/heavy 45 colt out of them???

If I had to have 1 truck gun to do it all (no birds) it would have to be a browning design lever action

Using your parameters, if you can't get it done with a 30-30 lever gun or 12 gauge pump you need to stay home. Unless.......

Do you know anyone with the last name Wick? Have you ever stayed at the Continental Hotel and paid with a gold coin? Do you have an operator beard, wrap around sunglasses, immediately and compulsively press check any handgun handgun handed to you including revolvers, go by a call sign or carry a challenge coin in your pocket? If the answer to these questions is no then my first answer is my best answer.

I'll add another vote for a PSA KISS AR for around $400+/- you could go with 11.5 or 16" depending on your preference. They are 1:7 twists, most that I've seen. You can pop one of these together for less than $400 if you cheap out on everything. IMG_20190930_123342.jpg

Either that or a good old fashioned 30-30 single or lever...

Scour the LGS/gun show market and look for something cheap, functional and without any present or future collector value. If you go with an old MilSurp, find a sporterized example that is still functional -- if you handload, there are tons of cheap sporterized Type 99 Arisaka's floating around.

Going new, a Ruger American or something similar should be worth considering. If you can wait out the current Covid-19 panic buy, there should be a lot of cheap used ARs coming onto the market in the near future.

Another vote here for Mosin. One in decent shape, anyway..... So that with decent ammo and some practice it seems that minute of pig accuracy is achievable. Or an SKS, which is compact, handy, and could meet that aforementioned accuracy requirement.

Just purchased on a bid for an SKS to be used as a Side X Side UTV gun that gets bounced around and will still come back for more. My choice would be and SKS.

I'll second the sks. Or maybe the op could look into a Rossi Circuit judge. I think they make one in 44 mag. If they don't then they should.

I tried to buy a 336W Marlin from Wal-Mart a few years ago for that purpose, but could never get anyone there to show it to me when I showed up. Ended up finding a beater Chinese SKS at a pawn shop a little later.

Not long after that, I found a beater Winchester 94 and bought that, too. Admittedly, neither has ever been placed into that role, nor has any other gun yet. Might be coming, though.

A Mosin M44 would be good for that, too. I still regret not buying the last one I saw, about four years ago, for $400.

(it's "cheap".)

Hi point in 10mm would be perfect for this
Have been on the fence about buying one for a couple of years now. In that time I have watched the price steadily rise.

I want a scoped 10mm but those are hard to find. Only problem if I did find one would be finding a nice 10mm autoloader to go with it as I don't have one in that calber. Decisions in life can be hard sometimes and expensive.

Lever action looks good in a truck window, 30/30 is my all around pick, plus your in Oklahoma...every truck has a gun, drives the crooks crazy because they can't choose which one to steal...they end up going home and watching reruns of cops....bad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do...

I spent a lot of time in north Texas working on a good sized ranch and my favorite rifle was a bolt action in 6mm Remington or .243 Winchester. Both of those rounds are good to go for the previously mentioned creatures. I would take a good look at the Ruger American. A great honorable mention would be the Ruger American Ranch in 7.62x39. It is more of a short range gun but very accurate, even with cheap ammo. In many ways it has become the contemporary version of the .30/30 rifle.

Good luck and let us know what you choose.

It'll depend on which side of the state you're on. West side has more wide open spaces leading more to long range shooting, east side seems to be more heavily forested so something shorter range might work, like a 12 ga with slugs. A .308 with synthetic stock would work pretty well anywhere.

I keep one of those H&R Remington 870 clones in my jeep and another in my truck. They cost about $140 at Walmart. I got both of mine second hand for $100 each. If I was going to keep a rifle for deer or hog in a truck, I would try to find a used Remington 770, or something else in this class, and put something like a Simmons scope on it.

Hardly a better truck gun I can think of than a Ruger American Ranch in .223, 6.5 Grendel or 7.62x39.
