Any supplier that doesn't charge huge shipping fees for primers?

I was going to buy some primers online and bailed when I saw that they tack on an additional $20 to the standard shipping fee. Is this a widespread practice?

HazMat fee, charged by the carriers passed on by vendors, to recover the cost of HazMat training and compliance in their logistics.

You can usually find "Free Haz on $150" sales every 3 months.

Watch for sales or find a buddy who needs to order and split the fee to take the sting out a little. It is typical though, HAZMAT fee charged to move them, they're not gouging you (at least not there :) )

Midway's hazmat feed is only $12 IIRC. And if you watch they sometime discount that for special sales. I can buy 1000 WSR primers from Midway pay shipping and hazmat and sales tax and still end of a little cheaper than the local Cabelas.

HAZMAT fees are also charged to ship reloading powders. Vendors only charge one fee per shipment, so try to buy primers and powder at the same time.
This "should" read: one fee per 48 lbs. Once you go over that it triggers another Hazmat fee. I buy near that amount almost every time and I have on occasion gone over it.

Do also note some vendors will not combine haz mat fees so ask when buying before you purchase.

I also try to buy as much as I can per shipment to spread that haz mat fee out over many primers and propellant.

The key as the other guys said, catch the free or $.01 HAZMAT with free shipping combos and order a a few hundred dollars worth at once. It's the only way I've found mail ordering primers and powders to be practical.

You can typically buy several 8# jugs of powder and several sleeves of 5000 primers to be shipped in one box for the hazmat fees - makes the unit costs lower

Grafs advertises $9.95 flat rate shipping and $12.50 Hazmat.

But, like anything else, the only price that matters is total cost of the product delivered to you.
Midway has some 'fairly decent' shipping/Hazmat fees, but the cost of the product is easily high enough to make it a wash (or worse)
Powder Valley has some of the best product prices around, but $20 Hazmat with shipping starting at $15 is a bit tough to swallow on a small order.

And then you need to determine whether your particular vendor is also collecting sales tax for your state (if applicable)

I thought that powder and primers cannot be shipped in the same container and the hazmat fee applied to each container.

Powder and primer vendors do funny things with HAZMAT and shipping charges. Some with low HM charge more for shipping and/or product.

My MO is to open several tabs on my browser, go to several vendors and put the same combination of primers and powder in the shopping carts and see which is cheapest.

I used to work for UPS. I was a supervisor at the area terminal and I was trained as a hazmat package auditor. All hazmat are pulled off the conveyors to have the 5 part shipping papers checked ,dated and intialed by me or my auditor to ensure it was an allowed item & quantity. They were then all loaded together at then end of the night into the trailer. The Primers & powder would not be allowed in the same package. We kept a copy of the 5 part form and the driver is required to have a copy of each hazmat 5 part shipping papers in his cab. Hazmats definately take more time and personel than standard packages

Every Powder Valley order I have placed in the last 7 years (several orders a year) has had both powder and primers as part of the order. They have always arrived in the same package.

Same here, for a lot longer than 7 years. Three of us usually go togather and it's rare that we don't have the 48 pounds max - always primers and powder in the same box.

Brownells is famous for having almost daily "deals" and "sales", some of which are for "free Hazmat". They do it this way as a ploy to keep you coming back and get their web page "hit count" way up. Sales usually last no more than 12-24 hours, so you generally won't see them posted on THR. You simply have to play their game.
