I was looking to buy some primers on GB. Noticed that some sellers charge $40 hazmat fee and some only charge $12 or $13 for shipping cost (one I'm looking at includes the shipping with the purchase price). Does UPS or Fedex charge a hazmat fee for primers or not? Thanks.

YES, absolutely and to top it off, the shipper is required to take classes pertaining to HAZ-MAT

So if someone is charging 12-13 for shipping primers there is most like one of three things happening:

1) The cost of HAZ-MAT is rolled into the price
or
2) Someone is planning eat the HAZ-MAT fees
or
3) Someone is planning to ship the primers in an illegal manner

newfalguy101...you nailed it. I've seen certain GB listings re primers & powder with no hazmat charge shown...hmmm and I don't tink they're doing it out of a kind heart!

I actually had some primers listed, until I discovered that I would have to complete a $1,000+ class on packaging HAZ-MAT for shipping....................not worth it by a longshot to GIVE away primers LOL

Just to give you a guide to charges.

Midway charges a $28 hazmat fee for primers. So I would think $40 would be Hazmat and shipping ($12?)

So if I load the primer into brass, it is not HAZMAT anymore! Kind of remind me that when I was in airbag business, I could not transport an airbag in my car, but it is OK if I put the airbag in a steering wheel!

Yup, you have to figure in the Hazmat fee and the shipping, which might be partially off set by the local sales tax you'll be paying.

With a hazmat fee of $28, if you are buying 14k primers, you'll be adding $2 per thousand to your purchase

I always try to order primers when I order powder, so I can roll it all in to one HAZ-MAT fee.
Most places will ship both for one hazmat.
I can't remeber but someone (Midway USA?) ends up charging two HAZ-MATS because powder and primers come from different places.
(might not be MIdway, I can't remeber. Note, I do really like MIdway for other stuff though)

My LGS usually wants ~$30 lb for powder, if I order it for $20 or $25 and lb the saving on 4 lb of powder and the primers pays for itself. I do support my LGS as well.

Yes it is Midway. Their zoning does not allow primers and powder to be in the same place (no idea why) so they are 2 different orders and require 2 haz mats.

Someone posted they bought primers from Gunbroker and the primers were shipped in just the primer cardboard box and colored tape was placed over the word primers. They charged a Haz Mat Fee but clearly did not pay it or package the primers correctly.

Primed brass is not a Haz Mat as once in the brass they can not form a chain reaction explosion or detonate one and they another like if in a press primer tube.

I hope you're joking that you have no idea why primers and powder shouldn't be shipped together....

I never said that. I said stored in the same place, and they can be shipped at the same time package.

Buy powder and primer for another place and you pay ONE haz mat
