I got a "delay" on my gun purchase today. First time I've ever had that happen and I purchase about a gun a year. I have no criminal record and have never been arrested. In fact, I just let my 03 FFL expire last year. Any idea? Should I be worried? Couldn't really find much on Google.

I use to get denied every time (thanks to my brother stealing my ID) until I did a VAF and was issued a UPIN. Since getting my UPIN, the longest delay has been about 1 1/2 hours which was on my last purchase at the beginning of April. It usually takes 5-10 minutes for my back ground check since it has to be reviewed by someone. It doesn't matter if the check is done over the phone or on a computer since the computer automatically kicks to a live person to review.

Happened to me about 10 days ago. I was told, like Meeks36 said, that everyone's buying a gun these days and they are just overwhelmed. It's really nothing to worry about. I believe if they don't hear anything in 3, or maybe it's 5 days, it's not a denial and you get the firearm. This last one was the first time I didn't have to wait the full term and was approved on the 2nd day.

I got delayed by almost a whole week on my first ever Walmart gun purchase a few weeks ago. That was my first ever delay. While I was on that delay, another gun I ordered had finally came in through a LGS. Stopped in after work, filled out the form. He submitted it online, came back "researching" Then 5 minutes later he tells me I'm good to go. If you know you haven't done anything it is frustrating, but it'll all get sorted out.

Lately most seem to go to "Pending", but "Research" is usually a sign of death, but the new problem is "Indeterminate". Can't hand it over, but it isn't a "Denial".

In PA, I was delayed almost 100% of the time. Regardless of what I did, 30 minutes after Ieft the store...cleared! I could dawdle in the store for 3 hours or leave immediately...30 minutes later, cleared. I did ultimately get UPIN, which helped.

In Texas, a CHL is a “get out of jail free” card....worth every effort...streamlines the process completely.

Seems in Washington SState, having a CPL means you must be a gun nut and automatic delay. Our governor HATES gun owners with a passion and has done everything within his power to make life more difficult for us. The latest is now all gun purchases must be approved by the local police jurisdiction after they review your medical and mental health records. Usually takes 2-3 days. Before that, I would go in and show my CPL, fill out the form, then get delayed. My nearest/only FFL in the area is a 30-mile round trip for me, so it is a bit of a hassle.

I had that happen on my last purchase, during the height of the panic, got delayed the full 3 days, and called to come pick it up on the following day.

Guess it depends on where you are..I did the BGC about 2 weeks ago and it took 55 minutes..my son did one about a week ago..45 minutes..Colorado.

I get delayed 50% of the time at least. I have a ccw and no reason to ever be denied. It is only a problem at stores where their store policy requires an approval and not just wait the 5 business days. I’ve found my delays just stay delayed forever. I was at a rural king a few years ago and was prevented from buying a J frame, because I was delayed and their store policy wouldn’t allow a sale after even 2 weeks.

A google search of my name will show criminals with my same first and last name. I always assumed that was the reason, but no way to know for sure what causes the delay.

No need to Google because there are at least a hundred threads about "NICS Delays/Denials" on this website.
The FBI NICS check is a name and descriptive information search. If your name and information results in multiple records being returned, a NICS Examiner is required to determine if you are the same person as a prohibited buyer.

It is 3 full business days legally, but places like Walmart wont let you pick up until they get an approval.
For the millionth time, no its not.
An FBI NICS delay can be up to three business days, beginning the next business day and does not include Saturdays, Sundays or days that state offices are closed.
During COVID19, many states have shortened work weeks or hours, resulting in Brady transfer dates longer than three weeks.

Here in the Republic of Texas a LTC means not having to do a background check.

I lived over half my life in the Pacific NW. I'm glad I got out when I did.

In the last eight or so years I have purchased maybe a couple dozen guns from dealers and had only two "delays" on a check--and the second one was a week and a half ago, so I don't think you're being singled out. My receiving FFL was going to wait over a calendar week before proceeding, but since they only charge a $15 transfer fee I am sure not complaining. Anyway, approval came through after three days.

Some of ya'll need to remember what FBI NICS and federal law says is a delay vs what your state may require. In these types of threads people start posting about what their state requires or allows and it has zero bearing on the OP.....for example state firearm permits (CHL,LTC,CHP, CCW.etc) that serve as an exemption to the NICS check. If his state doesn't have such a permit exemption it does him no good for you to tell him what Texas, Rode Island or Guam allows.

Most states contact the FBI NICS directly, but some states have a state agency serve as the POC (Point of Contact) for the dealer. Those states may ask for information not required under the Brady Law and may have more lengthy or more restrictive "delays" than what Federal law requires.
Want to know who you state contacts?

And, certain companies have their own more stringent firearms sales policies as I've found out first hand.
