Hope all you gentlemen are well and able to find a good open bar somewhere:cool:

I own several 44 Magnums and many other Big bore revolvers primarily for deer hunting. And just because it's the American way:evil:
I've always drooled over the performance center V comp and I'm now seriously considering getting one with the 4-inch Barrel which I can get for 1300 new.

I own several 629 performance centers with 6-8 inch barrels &Dan Wesson 6 " 44
And a 5in Ruger Redhawk both with ported barrels.

So is the v-comp worth it and why?
I don't need it as a carry gun and God knows I don't legitimately need it as a hunting gun but still it's one of those guns I haven't gotten over yet.

While you're at it what are your thoughts on the Taurus 444 raging Hunter not the raging bull but the raging Hunter?

If I got the V comp I would probably sell the Ruger Redhawk.
My red hawk has a nice trigger job and ported barrel so it's a good kind but I'm not sure it's a great gun unless I need it to kill something when I run out of bullets or break a car windshield.
Would you give up a good Red hawk 5 in for a v comp 4 in why or why not?
Can I legitimately hunt with the 4-inch Vcomp? Will the V comp handle hot 44 Magnum

JMHO I don't like ported revolvers. They are noisy enough as is, don't need to make them worst. My brother has a 6.5-inch Taurus 44 with porting and vs my M29 with the same barrel length I find my un-ported revolver much more pleasant to shoot. The minor recoil reduction and muzzle climb control the porting offers does not justify the extra noise and blast for me. YMMV.

I would go with the raging bull. So you can shoot hot rounds. These are 350 grain +p+ . I run them in my super Blackhawk. Confident they will stop anything in the USA. Alaska included.

The only way you will really know for sure is to get your hands on one and try it. Why not buy the V Comp then decide whether or not to get rid of the Ruger. If the V Comp isn't what you want, sell it and consider the loss on sale a rental fee.

FWIW

Thanks
Paul, if funds were unlimited that would be a reasonable approach, but anyway thanks for being a  on my shoulder.

Meeks
That is a good rational argument for me to keep what I have, and I do know and appreciate the ruggedness of both RedHawks and Dan Wesson. Thanks for being the angel on my shoulder

The V-Comp looks pretty cool, but I too don't like the noisy compensators. This one is removable, so you have the option, but you already know what it's like to have a comp on your revolver. And let's face it, it's not called V-Comp for nothing. Also, for me, I'd prefer no shorter than 5" bbl in a 44. And also, I'm not ready for the cost of a PC just yet. BUT, if I were in your shoes, and had wanted it for so long, I'd get it; I'm more of a S&W guy, so I'd likely sell the RH.

Anybody actually have a v comp and have some commentary on it?

I have a 5" 357, it's a range toy...a damn good one!

My hunting revolver is a 6.5" Blackhawk.
That 44 V-comp will handle mag rounds well, there are MANY more practical revolvers ...but, if you want it. ..it's a great 44!
I love the V-Comps!

*Edit

I'd keep the Redhawk, I love my 5.5 44, if yours is ported and nice...not much of an upgrade.
However, for the money a 4" Redhawk is tough to beat comparativly.

Life is short
I'll never have time to shoot all the forty fours I already have as much as I want so I'll keep my $1,300 and use it to buy a few days off a bunch of reloading supplies and gas for hunting trips:thumbup:

I agree the RedHawks and super RedHawks are a hell of a tool and a good deal for the money I got my red hawk for a very good price and sold my Super Redhawk since I have 454 Casull Toklat and FA model 83
I'm just not sure I need both the Toklat and the Redhawk 44 both have five in barrels and are built like brick ****house

Which would you keep the nice Stainless 454 Toklat or a nice stainless ported 44 Redhawk?
I know I could get more money for the tow clat.
The gun should seem redundant but this wouldn't be the first time I had redundancy and I'm not sure I want to gut my collection yet lol

Has anyone done a decibel check on a ported (not muzzle-braked) revolver to see if they actually are noisier? A brake that is directing gasses back and/or to the sides I could see being louder, but a port upwards? I can’t tell if my power port 629 is noisier than my 629 mountain gun...especially since every revolver is “ported” at the B/C gap.

(A non-ported S&W Model 66)

Stay safe.

I have a 6" Freedom Arms M83 .475 Linebaugh with the typical 2 port Magnaport. I've had several people shoot and others observe my 4" M329 .44 Magnum with Full power load of 2400 compared to the 475 Linebaugh with 420gr and 25.0gr H110. All felt the non ported M329 .44 mag was louder.

Certainly not scientific but real world actual observation.

FWIW,

Paul

Nice collection of 44 I just came here for the drool factor sorry I can't offer any help as I have only held one not fired one. Widh I had a Dan Wesson to round out my collection.

Check out GunBroker for Dan Wesson's you should be able to get a good 44 for 700 to 1000 Topps.
The 15-2 and stainless steel 715 357 10 to settle between 500 + 700 with the stainless steel costing more.
Strongly recommend the Dan Wesson but the 44 magnum Dan Wesson are super chunky which may be a good thing but maybe excessively heavy but definitely will last forever

A ported/compensated 44 mag only makes sense if:

1) It's going to be a EDC in large/dangerous animal country and double taps are going probably be necessary for hunting and/or defensive purposes.

2)It's going to be a gun where max power/heavy grain 44 mags are going to be shot or for competition usage.

Huntolive my search has to be wrong. I have seen some nice DW on gunbroker yes but they all are going for 12 to 1500$

I'm a crusty, opinionated old codger and I say a gun barrel should have ONE hole, and that hole should run from breech to muzzle. If the gun needs more than one hole, I don't need the gun.

I also love my '29s and have drooled over the v-comp.

It's not at the top of my list but would I get it, of course. I'm (slowly) working my way towards it.

worth it, I doubt it.

why ? because I want one ;)

here's the gratuitous pistol photo :)

This was a precursor to the Performance Center V-comp, it is removable and came with a short cap that goes on the barrel end. S&W's Performance Center .44's are really well done.

What exactly is that model you put that gorgeous picture of and where do I get one and what is it going to cost me?

prices for Dan Wesson have gone up a lot recently and they can be fairly hot items on GunBroker auctions if they are nice but I have found good ones on guns international and GunBroker and Virginia gun trader and never paid more than 500 for a 15-2 and got a really nice 44 blued in near-perfect condition first 700

It's an early Performance Center S&W 629, don't know much more than that....suspect it was a limited run of handguns S&W did for a major distributor.
