Doing some midwayusa birthday discount shopping and ran across some MTM cans for fairly cheap and was wondering how they do for long term storage and range trips? I’m looking to store ammo in a basement for a year or so.

I have the harbor freight variety, look to be almost identical and a lot cheaper than MTM. They work fine, and hold up well enough when piled full of loose .357 to a point that no more can possibly fit.

I think the MTM cans are made to a different size so that they can snugly hold other MTM products. Not what I needed and not worth the extra expense for me, but may make sense for other folks.

I was interested in the 30 cal combo with the carry tray.

I like the MTM bullet boxes and the Ammo crates. But I agree the Harbor Freight ones seem just as good as the MTM ammo cans so I just get them when they’re on sale.

I have the Rural King version, they are a LOT lighter, have a gasket and do the job nicely - for a lot less than the imported metal ones from China or the rusty used ones.

I have two and way to heavy with a thousand rounds in it.
That's why you use either a 30 cal, 50 cal, or SAW box sized depending on how it's packed.

A 50 cal loaded with closest possible packing (~#640 7.62 NATO) is just about the biggest I want to handle.

SAW box (with 900 linked 5.56 originally) are great for bulkier packageing.

20mm, 25mm, 30mm, and 40mm boxes with the double lid closures are too heavy before you even put anything in them. Best used for river groovers.

If you got trouble with 30 cal cans full you might wanna work out a little more.

The MTM ammo cases that hold ammo boxes are pretty handy as a reloader. 700rds of longer pistol ammo (.45, 10mm) or 1000rds of the short stuff (9mm) all neatly packed in individual boxes appeals to the neat freak in me.

For bulk practice ammo I generally just dump it all (by type) in fat 50 cans and regret my choice every time I need to move them. I don’t actually know how much a fat 50 loaded to the top with 9mm ball weighs but lugging two of them (“for balance“) is a good reminder that I’m not as young as I once was. The .30 cal cans are handy for oddballs (I have one full of .22 TCM reloads for example) but for range trips I use plastic.

I bought two of the MTM 50 cal black at amazon, like the quality and price ($7.99 each, free shipping), and now I'm up to a dozen. I like that they're stackable, air tight, and lockable (I have kids). I didn't get the tray that holds three cans: I think it would be too heavy if the cans were loaded with ammo.

I have a few dozen of these.I can put 2000 loaded 9mm rounds in it and it doesn't waver. Also has the seal in the lid.The double latch is strong and sturdy.Caught them on sale for 9 bucks and free shipping a few years ago.

I got one similar to this can but not the zombie can and I really like it for the $9 I paid for it. I filled it with shotgun shells and emptied the metal can and what a difference in weight. I may get some culk or gasket maker and beef up the seal. I’ll be buying a few more soon.

I even know the people at MTM, met them at the Shot shows.. they are great people.. and while their products may look like all the other ‘plastic’ things out there,, believe me, there is a difference,,, I used to be in the plastic business,,,,the making of the plastic and there IS a difference.

Jumped on two zombie cans for $8 piece. Thanks guys for the info. I’ll reserve the metal GI cans for 22 that doesn’t get touched and the plastic ones for shotgun, rifle and pistol.
