In Northern Ohio taking a few days off with the family. Never been to the Civilian Marksmanship Store in my life, and since it's only a half hour from where we're staying decided to run over there. I was under the impression that they wouldn't have much of anything but they did have several Garands and 03's. Desiring to not sabotage the rest of vacation, I opted to only buy some Eley .22 ammo and call it a day.

Thank you for posting this thread. I go to Ohio yearly and I had no idea that store was there in Port Clinton. I can't afford anything in there but I'll still swing by in November.

I didn’t know the CMP had stores. Thanks for posting. Here is a link for all 3 stores.

Unfortunately, none near me. I am in California. Also none near where I wish to live in a couple years when I leave here for the last time. I would love to go there. Perhaps I need to visit family in my home state of Pennsylvania soon.

Someone here can probably clarify, but my understanding from talking with the folks there is if you're a member and pass the background check you can order online and have guns shipped directly to you. They're exempt in some way from having to use FFL dealers.

I bought a Garand from them a few years ago. The process worked really well.

You actually order by mail. (Maybe it has changed - but this is what I went through.) The CMP website has documented really well what needs to happen. As I recall I sent in a package of paperwork that included:
1. Proof of US Citizenship. (Copy of my passport page with picture.)
2. Notarized background check form.
3. Proof of membership in CMP-affiliated gun club. Many/most gun clubs have the CMP affiliation - and if someone isn't a member of one there are gun clubs (identified on CMP's website as I recall) that are easy to join that enable you to meet this requirement.
4. Proof of participation in some sort of formal shooting activity. Could be a local match. Or something along those lines. In my case I used to teach shooting sports to Boy Scouts - so my NRA Instructor credentials sufficed.

All this, along with a check, was snail-mailed in. A couple of months later, FedEx delivered the Garand in a hard case to my door. I *think* they're able to do this not only because of some special status overall for the org but also because what they're shipping falls under the Curio & Relic FFL licensing, but I'm speculating and may be wrong on this.

The CMP forum has running threads for how long Garand orders are taking to fill. It kind of ebbs and flows based on supply and demand. This will help set your expectation for how long things will take.

The CMP is just fantastic. When I posted pictures of my Garand in the forum someone noticed the lot number of the bolt I had was a lot that was supposed to be destroyed - some manufacturing issue many years ago. I brought it up to the CMP. They paid to have the rifle FedExed back to them, they replaced the bolt, checked headspace and test fired it, and then FedExed it back to me. Turnaround time total was about 1 week.

CMP revised the purchase forms and streamlined procedures for repeat customers. If you complete a new Universal Purchaser Certification and Agreement to buy a rifle from the CMP, signed before a Notary Public, you may for a period of three (3) years thereafter submit an application to purchase additional rifles, parts or ammunition without having the Purchaser Certification and Agreement notarized – provided that the “SHIP TO” address on the order form remains exactly the same.

Although for repeat orders you will not have to have the forms notarized, hard copy liability/order/certification forms – pages 1A, 2A and 3A – must still be completed and sent to the CMP with original (wet) signatures. These orders may not be faxed or emailed.

After three years a new notarized Universal Purchaser Certification and Agreement will be required for any additional rifle purchases. Any change of address on the order form automatically will require a new notarized Universal Purchaser Certification and Agreement.

Proof of citizenship, age, CMP-affiliated club membership and competitive shooting participation, and any copy of any license, permit, or Firearms Owner ID card required by your State or locality submitted with your initial “Universal” application will be kept on file by the CMP. If any item of proof above has expired, you must submit proof of current status with any subsequent application.

Join the Garand Collectors Association the premier CMP affiliated club. Only $25.00 a year.
