Anyone ever been to the CMP North store, in Port Clinton, OHIO? How is the selection? I am thinking about going down sometime in mid Jan. The trip would be eight hours round trip for me, and I just want to make sure it's not a waste. I would like to get a couple Garands, and maybe an 03 or an 03A3.
I can buy down there right? I am a MI resident.

I called them, and they said they would accept my NRA CCW training. That was the biggest thing I was worried about.:)
I am just sent a check to the Garand Collectors Association (GCA), they are affiliated with the CMP. They only thing I am waiting on is my proof of birth record, then I am all set.

I can't wait!!!:D Must have Garand!

they'll accept my CCW training??? wow! I wish I had known that before!! I'd already have a Garand!!! *smacks forehead*

is it legal to buy a firearm in person in another state, and bring it back to Michigan? is it a rifles=ok, but handguns=verboten thing? I'd like to know to, seeing as it seems I already qualify for purchasing a Rifle, .30 cal, M1.

As far as I know that is still the case for most states (CA excluded). IIRC, some states only allow over the counter sales of long guns only in surrounding (touching its border) states. I've, in the past, purchased from MI (Steyr SSG 69 PII), PA (Win Mod 70), and IN (Galil ARM) at gun shows (from gun dealers, not private sales) with no problems.

good deal! I think you're right, at least, that "border state" thing sound awfully familiar, now that you mention it. now, I'll just have to call the CMP myself and make sure that my CCW training counts. I know jason called and they said it did, but I want to be sure, anyway.

hey! anyone know about the selection there?? I don't mean to sound like I"m hijacking the thread with my above posts, but no-one answered Jason's questions (which are now mine, too.).

Jason & guys,

I've never been to the North Store, but from what I read on all the various "CMP heavy" web sites is that the inventory only gets replenished sporadically.

When word gets around that a new shipment of rifles has just come up from Anniston, numerous "pilgimages" get made to the North Store by all the Garand and '03 collectors and shooters, and of course, the best rifles all get "cherry picked"..... leaving what's left for the casual shopper (??).

Sometimes reports indicate a very small selection for weeks at a time prior to the next shipment of rifles coming in.

My best advice is to call the CMP North Store some weeks in advance and ask how the inventory currently exists... and ALSO ask when the next shipment is coming in. Plan your trip accordingly.

Unfortunately... I don't live close enough to Ohio to make a pilgrimage a really worthwhile adventure. I've bought all my many CMP purchases "sight unseen" through the normal order system. While I've been very happy with all my CMP rifles, it really would be a drool fest to be able to paw through racks of Garands just looking for the one (or 2 or 4) with my name on it. :D

Just my thoughts,
Swampy

Help me to understand this,

I live about an hour from Port Clinton. If I otherwise meet the requirements for CMP purchase of an M1, I can go to this store and select one and take it Home?

Could this be?

What are the requiements and the easiest way to achieve them?

I'll be getting an 03A3 and a Carbine from the father in law, but an M1 is on the short list.

Thanks,

NRA Instructor??

According to the CMP web site, they will take certification of being an NRA Instructor in place of proof of high power shooting experience/competition.

You might want to bouble check on that with them.

The store is a fun place to visit - you get to touch history!

usp_fan,

Yes... you can go to the CMP North Store and pick out the rifle you want.

BEWARE.... that when you walk in the door of the North Store, before you can purchase a rifle, you MUST have with you every single item of proof and paperwork that you would normally send through the mail if you'd ordered one that way.

This means...

Written PROOF of:

US Citizenship
Age of at least 18 years
CMP Club membership
Marksmanship activity

They have a notary on site that can notarize your "NICS" papers, i.e. the CMP's version of them.

They will perform the NICS check on you while you wait..... just like at a local gun or pawn shop.

Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the replys guys. I will definitely call down first, to check inventory. I want a couple service grade Garands, not the rack grade. The guy I talked with, told me the rack grade guns all had shot-out barrels.

Written PROOF of:

US Citizenship---Waiting on my proof of birth record.
Age of at least 18 years---Check
CMP Club membership---Membership is in the mail.
