Anyone use silica packs in ammo cans? What type do you get? Getting ready to purchase a couple cans and some shotgun shells and 22 ammo and my last attempt to store shotgun shells in an ammo can for a few years resulted in rusted shells.

yes, i get them from my pill bottles mostly. but i do believe amazon sells them.

i really will be buying some myself, right now, however, i just had a bunch saved up.

kinda a hoarder that way

i'll be getting the ones that can be "recharged" in the nuclear reactor.

I save them whenever they are in packages that are delivered. I have them in my brass containers, all my reloading gear I store outside. Also have a styrofoam cooler with them storing my primers, I have rice in one that I store equipment in. It's pretty humid in Florida for the stuff I keep stored outside. They seem to work very well.

Any specific brand you guys use? I looked on amazon and couldn’t find any info for using them with ammo or being rechargeable. Some reviews said you can recharge and some said no.

i use what ever came in the pill bottles. i must have a zillion of them that i save. these are very small packets, so as a result, i use maybe about 6 to 10. amazon has the rechargeable type. i know, i was there looking up that info when i was posting to you.

when the time permits, i will most certainly buy the rechargeable types, as i said, you toss them in the nuclear reactor, as per directions.

as for whether or not they can be used for ammo? of course they can. they are there to control / remove moisture, especially in a sealed container.

i do not have ammo cans, i have walmart plastic storage bins, that "lock" the lids shut.

again, i am EL Cheapo, i buy things that fit my needs.

DampRid works at sucking up moisture but the containers are pretty big and can spill. Might work for some applications like in a safe.

I keep one in the closet I keep my ammo and safe in. And a smaller one in safe. Works good so far.

I have many kinds but The cheap beads that turn pink when wet and blue when dry are my favorite. You can buy them by the 5 gallon bucket and put them in packs or cans with holes. Grainger/amazon/northern/lowes/uline/autozone... all sell it to use in shop air compressor dryers. Many engines and industrial parts and machines come shipped with 5-10lb packs of desiccant so I put those in my safe. Unfortunately many now come shipped with a brown pack of powder that when wet turns to a gel. Not re-usable and looks pretty nasty to boot. Why they chose brown I do not know

Just use a funnel. No matter what I do I hear those little bastards bouncing around when I refill my air line filters.

I use 30 gram packets, and frankly, was pretty shocked at how long they lasted, which was not very long at all. Maybe three months at best. So IMO those tiny little packets from OTC drug containers are useless, unless you use a whole bunch of them.

The only thing I use the tiny ones from pill bottles for is my machinist tool box. I usually throw a couple in each drawer that holds my precision measuring tools and gauges.

Nope. I found it wasn’t really worth the effort because most aren’t designed for long term use and I don’t live in a moist enough area to worry about short term moisture in my ammo.
