Hi gasmandave...my resource is the 2016 4th edition of the Supica and Nahas Standard S&W book.

Unfortunately the serial number records for the .38 Hand Ejector M&P of 1905 4th Change are quite vague. To quote that model description "Serial number range 241704 - 1000000 with 758,296 manufactured between 1915 and 1942."

The appendix which typically breaks down approximate manufacture years based on serial number ranges is not much help for that model...it lists the same information as above.

The text does mention the round butt as "scarce." The text also indicates nickel finish and target models "worth premium."

The text lists serial number 642,357 of some historical significance dating to 1934. And another example of a historical gun as 538,XXX as 1926. The text also indicates serial numbers for an army special order in 1919 were shipped within serial number range of 291,XXX. Hopefully that'll help put you in the ballpark.

Looking for year of manufacture

a) .357 Mag
b) 2.5
c) Round
d) 6
e) Adjustable rear
f) CFU81XX (From yoke)
g) 66-6

Thanks in advance!

Hi Outlaw75. "CFU" is not specifically listed. However, "CFT; CFW" is listed as "April 2003." I assume this denotes the range in which your gun would be included.

edited to note that the above information is from the 3rd edition of the Supica and Nahas book.

pics are for a gun owned by a friend who inherited it from his now deceased brother. The gun was in rough shape (dirty) and I said I’d try cleaning it and Looking for any info I can get on this gun. I am NOT a revolver guy...but I’d like to help him out. Anyone have a good video for detail strip and clean? I can take an AR or a Glock down to individual springs and bits, but have no idea how far I should go this gun before I may get over my head. Took off the grips...LOL!

Info is below.

a) .357 Mag

c) Round?
d) 6
e) Adjustable rear
f) Numbers and markings are in front of the cylinder on frame and include:

The K7773XX is the serial number. 19-2 is the Model number. The other numbers are assembly numbers and mean nothing
The gun was shipped near the end of 1967

You have a 32 Hand ejector 2nd change. Made from 1906-1909 with the serial number range of 51127-95500. Yours probably shipped in 1907 I would guess

You should have a Model 29 no dash. Model 29 should be stamped in the crane area when you open the cylinder. The model numbers started in 1957 and your gun should have shipped in 1958. Also according to the information I have, 8 3/8" Barrels were produced only after the model stamping started in 1958. There are a few pre 29's reported to have been made prior to 1957 but these are hardly ever seen

I would take the pictures and information to the S&W forum www.smith-wessonforum.com. Not to get it confused with the smithandwessonforum.com. There are 2 different ones. The first one is the one you want. We call it the big blue forum. The most knowledgeable S&W people on earth are on that forum. I'm hesitant to say, because as I understand it, the pre 29's in 8 3/8" are very rare, but I could be wrong. Only think I can tell you for sure is you are in good shape financially. Those guys over there won't try to steal it out from under you either. I'd sign up and put a post in the right catagory. The guy you want to respond is Doc44. In my opinion, one of the best S&W guys ever.

This going to be a thread for those who are looking for a date of manufacture for their S&W revolvers.

We'd need to know :

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

A picture or two is worth A LOT of words in this case...
