below are 2 test groups using H1000, 74 5 grains and 75.5 grains, using 200 Accubonds, .030 off the lands. In both pics the round not touching was fired from a cold barrel, while the other 2 shots that are touching were fired after a 15 minute cool down, and a boresnake run thru it. While the barrel was cooled, it was likely warmer than a good cold barrel. Is this common with magnums, that the warmer barrel shouts are more consistent? 74.5 velocity 2762 fps SD 14, 75.5 velocity 2814 SD 8. No pressure signs. 20200921_190033.jpg 20200923_174448.jpg

Three shot groups are only good tor establishing a coarse zero reference.
A 10shot group fired over 10minutes will show a degree of expected precision.
The fact that the first shot was in different positions relative to the group tells me that it’s random distribution.

But, I do understand that you don’t want to be shooting extended strings wasting expensive HUNTING bullets wearing out an expensive barrel with an expected short life expectancy.

I’ve got a .300RUM and a .257wbymag. I shoot three shot groups too. But, a group of over 1.5” tells me the rifle isn’t happy with the load.

Three shots are just to tell if you might have a shooter. You can tell in 3 shots if you dont, but 3 good ones and then you can load more and try from there. If you shoot 3 rounds and they are a foot apart theres no reason to shoot more.

Don't clean the barrel. You're not going to stop and clean between shots when hunting. Start with a fouled barrel then fire the 3,4, 5, or whatever you choose. It doesn't have to be rapid fire, but I wouldn't wait more than 30 seconds between shots. That is more realistic. It's not the cold barrel, but the lack of fouling that will throw off shots

A perfectly clean barrel will almost always impact different than after the barrel is fouled. I may clean my rifle before hunting season starts, but will make at least one trip to the range to fire a few rounds through the barrel prior to hunting with it. I don't clean the barrel again until after hunting season unless it gets wet. And once it is cleaned I won't hunt with THAT rifle again until I've had a chance to shoot it to foul the barrel.

I'm of the opinion that 3 shots if fine for a hunting rifle. If it will consistently place 3 shots into a 1" group time after time and on different range trips that tells me what I need to know. Three different groups of 3 fired on 3 different days tells me more than 10 shots fired on the same day.

All good points, the only reason I was letting it cool down do long was that I was trying to get one shot consistency. I always sight in with a fouled barrel.
