I have seen the photo before, but great to see it again. It reminds me of the folks that keep asking, what is the best caliber rifle for deer, bear, rabbit, moose....... and on and on etc. I think the guy in the picture used exactly the right one for him. Kinda like my ole Martin guitars, they work for me.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

I've seen that one years ago in one of the outdoor magazines. Still impressive. The rack looks small in comparison to the rest of the deer, but it is still a good rack.

I did not know that Colonel Harry Potter was from Maine nor that he had a twin brother. Regardless, that’s a stout deer

I really like that that picture. Horace Hinckley was apparently a hunter who was in the know in 1955 with his 33 Winchester. The rifle used a .338 diameter 200 grain bullet at 2,200 fps and was similar to the 338-06 that I use today. I have more velocity but as a woods hunter he really didn't need that extra velocity. That was a great deer and I'm sure he was the envy of all his friends. As a taxidermist it would have been an honor to have mounted his deer with that pretty cape. There's more to a deer than just antlers and the size of that deer is awe inspiring to a lifelong deer hunter.

IMG_4389.JPG This is a picture of one of my big Oklahoma bucks with the same body style and color of cape as the Hinckley buck. The head and neck are about the same size as his buck but just imagine adding 150 pounds to the body weight. One of the characteristics of a big mature buck like this is the space between the antlers on the top of the skull and the size of the eyes when compared to the size of the head.. The panel on the back of this deer is 24 inches tall. There's nothing prettier than a big whitetail buck with a gold colored cape. Mother nature and my taxidermy work.
