Why load 9mm ammo?

It sucks having to ration 9mm for my two carry guns that take it. I'm not getting to train with them near as much as I'd like.

I'd still answer the OP by saying that if I am going to spend my money and time loading, I'd rather spend it on something more interesting than 9mm. I'm sticking to the magnum calibers on my bench. More savings and more fun IMO.

I reloaded to provide a lighter load that would eject for my wife, factory loads had too much recoil. And for my derringer, I really light load it, my hand would hurt with factory loads. Now it's a lot cheaper, not just a few pennies.

My brother in law died around New Years and he had a bunch of handgun ammo that I have been selling for my sister inlaw for $35 a box. 380 auto, 9mm, 38 Super, 40cal.
I sold a lot of it and still have a bunch left.
He also had a looot od self defense ammo lose in containers I have been selling for $1 a round.

I reload so I don't need any of it.

I reload for every thing I have.

9mm can be quite interesting to load for. I have a single load only super slow 158 cast load for bowling log pins in the backyard. A really fast 85 gr HP load for varmints and soft targets and such, that actually cycles my action and doesn't cost .66/round even in good times, and my run of the mill 115 and 124 grain ammo is significantly more accurate and softer recoiling than anything factory made. My 124 grain SD practice load precisely matches velocity, recoil impulse, and POI of 124 gr XTP factory ammo. As an extra bonus, it's always in stock, at least as long as my pile of primers and bullets hold out (plenty of powder, even if I have to dip into the shotgun stash). I really don't count my time. The time I spend reloading is time otherwise wasted in front of the boob tube. Sometimes I'll even multi-task and do some mundane safe tasks in front of a football game. I save charging and seating for 100% focus though!

I will admit to buying 1000 rounds of bargain 115 gr new ammo last winter when it was cheap though. I find I enjoy shooting it less than my reloads though.

1000 plated bullets $89
1000 SP primers $32
Less than a pound of BE86 $15
Free brass $0
Comes to $136 per thousand
Or 13.6 cents per round

Yeah, plated are not fmj but are much better for steel shooting and run n gun.

When they were nine / ten a box I was reloading for five/ six a box. Reloading got me back into a sport I loved. I had quit shooting every week for a couple of decades. Other interest took over and I'm far from rich. Reloading allows me to pursue other hobbies and adds a new one that is cheaper than many.

Same here, I enjoy it and love the fact that I can load much better ammo, particularly for big rifles, fir a whole lot less money.

For all those who have asked the question for years "why bother loading 9mm when its so cheap,...

I load all my own cartridges (only ever bought 230 loaded rounds - rimfire excepted - since 1978) because I take pride in loading my own rounds and being able to optimize them for my particular gun.

Why do I load 9x19?

I enjoy reloading and 9x19 is one of the cartridges that I shoot. Hence I load 9x19.

On a progressive press, I can load a years worth of 9x19 in a few evenings work.

Then I can load some of the many other cartridges that I shoot.

Even when you could get a hundred round box of Federal 9mm at Wal-Mart for $17.97, I could load them for a little less. When I bought my press back in 2014, I started with 38/357 and 45acp since those were the more expensive calibers to buy ammo for. Within a year I got 9mm dies. I figured I already had the press and remembered back in 2012-13 when you couldn't find 9mm
