Armslist no longer free.....

in Pennsylvania Pafoa.com has a pretty active classified section. I sometimes see listings from nearby states(Ohio, Maryland,NJ)

I think they may have been hacked. The large discrepancy between credit card and ACH prices is too much. Use your bank to transfer funds and you just gave criminals you bank info. I don't know for a fact this is the case. Hackers are everywhere. I had some sort of problem with Social Security. I learned that hackers not only hacked their website but also their phone. If you called them you would have been talking to criminals not Social Security people. I'd be very wary. Btw I was just on Armslist before I came here and no popup.

If you live in the northwest there is a very active classified section at: northwestfirearms.com

Thanks. Hadn't heard of most of those. Buckey I'm familiar with. Never had any luck selling on there. Just posted an add on that OH Gun Owners site. We'll see how it does.

After quickly joining then looking around, it seems as though this site is pretty much dead activity wise. Not much going on there it seems.

Yeah, not much going on there. The most recent for sale add in the long guns section was from two years ago.

I hate that. You have to be so cryptic that no one knows what you’re trying to sell. At least on Armslist I could call it a gun.
Yeah, kind of. You could usually sneak key phrases in that would identify the item.

FS: Antique Japanese lead propulsion device.
Uses 7.7mm lead impacters. (7.7 Jap ammo)
adopted in the 99th year of the Meiji period (Type 99)
Early production model (not a last ditch)
comes with dust cover and rust proof wood grips in good condition. (stock isn't trashed)
missing government property marking (mum has been ground off)

And they still tend to get reported pretty quick.

I tried to log into armslist just now and got a security warning from my web browser. (Expired certificate). So we may be looking at a hack.

Hack or legitimate user fee, this stinks of Photobucket. User fee above and beyond acceptable. I quit going to the local gun shows or even flee markets because I am not going to pay someone to just show up and look around. If they really need to earn more on their investment then increase the fees for selling or advertising. You just don't charge the possible buyer a fee to look.

Locally we have a Ski Hill area that recently decided that during the summer months they are going to take their huge parking lot and create an outdoor flee market. A real money maker indeed. They charge the sellers for table space and then they charge the visitors for parking and then also an entrance fee. Again I am not paying someone to let me shop from them.

A real shame of course as I have purchased a number of firearms locally and a few times I was able to find some brass I needed at the time. Will be a real loss for a local source.

Is it realistic to hold out hope that it is a hack and it will be fixed?
Maybe. I'm holding out hope that Armslist will see the error of their ways, if it's not a hack.

Are there any computer guys on here? How hard is it to start something like Armslist?

In the past five years or so, I've made about eighteen deals on Armslist.

As for payment methods they listed (last night), what is ACH?
* The main question is whether one can join for a month, try a WTB (S&W 3rd. Gen ****), but if nobody responds, easily drop the membership at the end of the four weeks?

Could be a big miscommunication between management and the Web developer.

Management said "We want to charge the fee our on all accounts". Management then MEANT accounts that are selling, not buyers.

Problem doesn't get caught during the demo because management has a demo login to get into the system.

I could easily see this happening.

Automatic (or automated) Clearing House--basically "e checks" where you create a bank draft using the bank routing number and account number. Typically, single use.

I'd recommend being careful using that. I have customers who pay their bills monthly using ACH, and if an error is made excess money is withdrawn from their bank account. We recommend that they not use it for this reason as mistakes do happen.

I have been using armslist for a couple of years. It is like craigslist for gun stuff and requires all the same precautions on my end and attracts all the same idiots on their end. If you're getting ripped off as a seller or a buyer perhaps it isn't your venue to buy and sell things.
Too bad about the whole backpage fiasco. Shutdown to punish criminals. Once again, punishing law abiding citizens from buying guns. Instead of going after specific criminals, they take down the whole thing in one lazy action.

3 pages and nobody has mentioned this site's Buy, Sell, Trade pages as an alternative to AL? I know it's a more limited audience than AL has but may be more likely to find a real buyer on here than all the low-ballers on AL. And it's free here too.

This excellent site does have s classified section , but the ftf possibilities are very limited. Not the fault of the site by any means , just a matter of logistics.

You're less likely to find a local buyer though, which was the primary use for Armslist. I listed several things on here, and got almost zero action.

gunlistings.org is free, organized by state and seems very active. I didn't know about it and was told at another forum, will give it a try. So long Armslist!
gunlistings.org

Not wanting to tangle with unnecessary high tech (or future hackers) on Armslist, I might no longer use it to post any sort of ad.
Am now scanning the S&W, Sigs, HKs every day. If the right gun somehow appears in the desired area (west third) of this very long state, might get lucky.

That's precisely why I just listed on THR, a "WTB" (FTF/Face-To-Face only) any S&W 3rd. Gen 9mm Compact, if in west TN.
If it doesn't work out, fine. I'll then have at least $600-800 (later) for ammo whenever the "Bubble deflation" prompts a panic among ammo flippers next year, or later.

HankC: Thanks. Had totally forgotten about gunlistings.org.
